Since the 1960s, Stephen Willats is counted as one of the most influential protagonists of international conceptual art in England. One of the main focuses of his work has always been the examination of urban realities by means of communication processes, network formation, and self-organising structures. Willats illustrates various systems of social interaction through an array of drawings, diagrams, photo-collages, computer-operated communication-devices, and animations. The artist works directly with people: their relationships to each other – be it in a private or professional environment – as well as their relationship to an omnipresent system of everyday symbols; from architectural structures to objects, materials, and sounds that surround us continually. Willats poses the question as to how the personal values and lebensraum of the individual are perceived within society, and how society defines and adopts them.

Convolution Journal/Petunia Magazine – talk and screening, starts at 8.30 pm

For their joint presentation at Motto Berlin, Convolution, Journal for Critical Experiment and Petunia, developed a talk-screening performance.
The two magazines share a questioning about the status and ways of criticism, experimenting with new ways of communication through their magazines: in Petunia, there are no chapters or sections, but diverse textual forms, from theoretical texts to diary entries to pure fiction or comics, mostly concerning contemporary art.
Convolution journal seeks to promote a proliferation of the forms available for cultural critique, taken in the broadest sense. It ventures to publish short, experimental work that challenges prevailing divisions between creative writing and criticism, poetry and prose, image and text. Convolution brings together a shifting collectivity of scholars, artists, poets, musicians and critics to explore the fragmentary, the interdisciplinary, the visual, the unpublishable, and the miscellaneous.
Conversation about critical form will include readings by Convolution contributors Michael Baers and Christian Hawkey.
Their presentation ends with the screening of “Born in Flames” – starting at 10.00 pm
A 1983 documentary-style feminist science-fiction film by Lizzie Borden that explores racism, classism, sexism and heterosexism in an alternative United States Socialist Democracy.
Through the life of two different feminist groups of New York City, the film becomes a manifesto for direct activism, showing different points of view and discussions about it, culminating in the message that the action should inevitably come from the oppressed. 80 minutes, English.

DIK Fagazine is happy to invite you for the Berlin premiere of our “BEFORE ’89” issue at Motto. Join us for a launch event with editor Karol Radziszewski and Berlin based artist Piotr Nathan who is interviewed in this issue.

The latest issue of DIK Fagazine, “BEFORE ’89,” is the culmination of extensive archive work, as well as travels across Europe. Drawing from a range of contributors, the magazine traces a cultural legacy specific to Poland, while following a trail through Romania, Estonia, Latvia, Serbia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Wolfgang Tillmans, who first visited Warsaw in 2011, provides an account of the anniversary of the plane crash in Smolensk, celebrated in the overblown national-religious vein of the Polish right. Bruce LaBruce’s contribution gives the impression that he’s describing a time when communism is alive and well, and not Poland in the year 2000.

The publication explores park cruising areas, train stations, beaches and other casual hook-up spots. Ryszard Kisiel shares the astonishing story of his zine titled “Filo”, Slava Mogutin uncovers the story of homosexuals in the Soviet Gulags, and BEFORE ’89 conducts a search investigation for Michel Foucault’s Polish lover.

Over the past few years, Eva Grubinger’s work has investigated the definition of public, institutional, and museum spaces through installations and objects. In these works, ruptures or breaks in the assumed function of space or site-specific installations, as well as those involving the allocation of content to employed forms, play a significant role.

Decoy documents the eponymous exhibition at Landesgalerie Linz in 2011 in which Grubinger presented large-scale sculptural works, all of which referenced the fishing—lures, mooring rings, a dock—and both subtly and explicitly engaged a vocabulary of the alluring. The catalogue includes an introduction by Martin Hochleitner and an essay by Carson Chan.
