Penelope Umbrico – Desk Trajectories (As Is)

A new series by Penelope Umbrico, Desk Trajectories (As Is) includes found images of used office desks for sale on the Internet. This work serves as an answer to her continual interest in a certain optimism typically associated with fictions of unattainable lifestyles marketed for and lusted after by consumers.

These desks, once the definitive site of organization and productivity, now sit empty, dusty, and cumbersome as awkward in their photographic frame as they are in the space in which they are pictured. The disorienting compositional space of the pictured flat planes inhibits the viewer to readily discern and give context to the objects presented. In these pictures, all efficiency, productivity, and elegance is in question the mere fact that the desk is out of commission, being sold, points to an attendant deflation of these values.

Diwa Tamrong – Somebody Else’s Problem

Somebody Else’s Problem (SEP) is an ongoing series that explores the different ways an artist can loose control of their own work. Every new part to the series uses means of destruction, re-contextualization, collaboration and attempts of preservation in order to further investigate this notion. The work continues to grow with each version, but the artist’s control over the work dwindles as it falls into the hands of other people, disseminating through the internet and everything in between.

little_and_large_editions_motto_91010

Little & Large Editions was set up to produce and distribute little and large editions. Our plan is to offer artists the opportunity to work with us on fabricating their ideas. We want to work with both little and large artists, the hope is that the large artists will help pay for the little artists and occasionally vice versa. Our goal is to realise things and make these things available.
Our aim is to run this company as a non profit organisation.
We want to make money for artists who need money and some for those who do not.

We’d like to offer editions that we would like to own and ones that you will want to buy. Any profits, both little and large, will go directly back into running the company.

We are proud to present our first edition with Dave Allen –
It swung back and forth, back and forth until forever. Then it stopped and howled endlessly.
A 12″ vinyl record with printed sleeve will be played and for sale at Motto or through our website www.littleandlargeeditions.com

Drinks will be served – dress accordingly

Lying Freely, Ruth Buchanan

In her itinerant project ‘Lying Freely’, that has evolved in various locations since June 2009, Ruth Buchanan probes questions around the tension between private and public spheres by practicing a method that might be named after the project title, Lying Freely. This has involved Buchanan weaving stories by and about the public personas of three female writers Janet Frame, Virginia Woolf and Agatha Christie into her own speculative writings. The writing becomes scripts for manoeuvring through spaces of systemization and behavioural codification, such as an archive (The Hocken Collection), a hotel (Old Swan Hotel), a library (The British Library). These spaces, each associated with one of the authors, were reconfigured in a haptic choreography performed for and within different locations that hosted the project—a monumental house, a theatre, a gallery.

Co-published by Jan Van Eyck Academie Maastricht and Casco Office for Art, Design and Theory, Utrecht.
