Sculptures Also Die offering a reflection on contemporary sculpture curated by Lorenzo Benedetti through new and existing work by twelve Italian and international artists who will be forging a reflection on the meaning, the potential and the new experimental approaches in sculpture today. Contemporary artists tend to use new forms and materials to address a broader time span in an ongoing dialogue between the past and the future; yet at the same time, the exhibition reflects on the way in which today’s artists are also rediscovering such materials as bronze, stone or ceramic, that appeared to have been relegated to the purely academic sphere. These materials are rediscovered and used in a conceptual manner to reflect on such themes as the monument, the fragment, the way materials wear over time, and the recovery of the recent modernist past.

During the Exhibition, the Studio Will Be Close. Lorenzo Benedetti & Caroline Dumalin (Eds.). Wiels / Motto Books.

During the Exhibition, the Studio Will Be Close is published on the occasion of the eponymous group exhibition organised by WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels (14 June – 17 August 2014) in collaboration with Motto Books.

The trilingual exhibition publication is composed of nine chapters in one volume. The introductory chapter features an essay by curator Lorenzo Benedetti, whose point of departure is the fine line and particular interaction between production and presentation at the art centre. What lies in between the physical proximity of the working studios and exhibition spaces turns out to be more than just a symbolic separation. Eight former artists-in-residence at WIELS were invited to design their own book space that consists of each 16 pages, in relation to their contributions to the dialogue of the show.

Contributors: Lorenzo Benedetti, Melissa Gordon, Lina Viste Grønli, Rob Johannesma, Aukje Koks, G. Küng, Cathérine Lommée, Emmanuelle Quertain, Grace Schwindt

Manifesta Journal #12

Manifesta Journal is an international journal focusing on the practices and theories of contemporary curatorship. Manifesta Journal explores and analyzes current developments in curatorial work, in correspondence with the evolution of the Manifesta Biennial over the course of the past decade. The main aim of the journal is to give a stronger voice to an up-and-coming group of (non-) institutional curators, intellectuals, theorists and critics, and to function as a platform for the articulation and discussion of their positions within a pan-European and transcontinental context.
Justified by what is now the “stable” status of the curator, by the diversity within the broader community of professional curators and by the network of curatorial schools, programs and courses in Europe and beyond, Manifesta Journal intends to continue stimulating the establishment of curatorial self-reflection and investigation.
