The work of Lee Lozano (1930-1999) is one of the best-kept secrets in today’s contemporary art world. She was a woman artist who established herself and her work in New York in the 1960s in a world dominated by men and then decided to give it all up in the early 1970s and moved to Dallas. Lozano’s work, even in the short period she was active in New York, encompassed, and in many ways mastered, a wide range of styles from text works to abstract paintings, drawings to everyday activities declared art. She knew and collaborated with some of the most famous names of minimalism and conceptualism, but she always held herself a little apart. She fought for her own idealisms, matched it with her disillusionment and questioned feminism even as she made drawings of the absurdities of a patriarchal world where tools, machines, weapons and money dominate the imagination. Her later Language Pieces can now be understood as some of the most radical expressions of the conceptual movement at that time.

This publication assembles images from her work and archives to gether with a series of texts that outline her development as an artist from the 1950s and focus on particular activities or reminiscences. There is also the partial transcript of a unique recording of a lecture Lee Lozano gave at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1971 shortly before she left the art world.

In total, this book sheds light on a fascinating individual artist and also adds another point of view to the rich, complex story of the NewYork art scene in the 1960s and its continued resonance in our culture today.

Lukas Panek’s Inner, Outer, Paintings, Friends is an archive, a collection of everyday photographs, moments of intimacy, anonymous images from the internet, and the artist’s own work sessions. Through this exploration, which constitutes his playground, he documents the variety of representations in today’s online culture. Registers intermingle and create ambiguous narratives.In the process, familiar forms of narrative are deliberately undermined and the reader is immersed and drawn into the flow of images.
Inner, Outer, Paintings, Friends thus gathers more than 500 images and presents in its second part the paintings of Lukas Panek. Selected from this flow, they are both extracts of a global experience common to all, and a reflection of a personal world. This book plunges us into the abundant, vibrant and playful work of this young Berlin artist, a graduate of the Dusseldörf school, and offers us an extremely current vision of contemporary photography.

Rita Ackermann was born in Budapest in 1968 and today lives and works in New York. Arriving in America from Hungary in the early 1990s, she is immediately faced with a major challenge: to be able to survive in a foreign country as a young artist, she must be able to integrate the aesthetics of her cultural background together with what the new country offers her in her artistic practice. Her first drawings and paintings made between 1993 and 1996 show adolescent female figures multiplied within the composition and engaged in various self-destructive activities, expressed to the public through understandable and direct language. About twenty years later Ackermann abandons the figure and develops the series of works he entitles Mama, a set of compositions in which lines and gestures, figures and motifs rise to the surface of the canvas to then dissolve and reappear elsewhere. On the occasion of the exhibition at MASI Lugano, in 2022 Ackermann begins a new series of paintings entitled War Drawings, where oil, grease pencil and acrylic are heavily worked on rough linen canvas. In these works, the figures get lost and the lines are scraped away to reveal fragmented compositions.

Published on the occasion of the artist’s solo exhibition at the MASI in Lugano, entitled Hidden, this book contains reproductions of all the works in the exhibition and others selected personally by the artist.

Yves Klein Japon. Éditions Dilecta

Yves Klein (1928–62) first traveled to Japan as a young man in 1952, motivated primarily by his interest in judo. During his 15 months abroad, Klein had numerous important creative and philosophical revelations that culminated in the launch of his artistic career upon his return to Paris.

Prepared in collaboration with the Yves Klein Archives, this volume details Klein’s relationship with Japan through nearly 150 archival documents, photographs and letters, inviting the reader on his journey from martial arts to fine art at the very beginning of his career. Along the way we learn of Klein’s important encounters with art critic Takachiyo Uemura, painter Keizo Koyama and design professor Masaki Yamaguchi. “Yves Klein Japon” provides essential insight into the origins of Klein’s oeuvre as both a groundbreaking visual artist and prolific writer whose short-lived career helped to transform postwar art.

Painted in 1656 by Diego Velázquez, Las Meninas is one of the most revered and innovative artworks in history. Widely discussed, debated and critiqued, it has inspired artists, writers and filmmakers for centuries.

Andrew Kerr. Inverleith House, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

In 1999, Inverleith House presented an exhibition open to all artists living and working in Scotland, called ‘Absolut Open’. The 29 artists chosen to exhibit were selected from submissions by over 350 artists, spanning several generations and encompassing every artistic medium and style. A few of the artists represented were already well-known at the time, but most were not. One of the strangest and most scuccessfuil works in the exhibition was a cardbopard sculpture made by Andrew Kerr, a young artist who had only just graduated from Glasgow School of Art. It took the form of a ‘cast.’ taken from another sculpture – the Garden’s ‘Slate Cone’ (Andy Goldsworthy, 1990; resting on the gallery floor like an upturned carapace it was positioned so that both could be viewed simultaneously by looking out of a window towards the hawthorn tree near which Goldsworthy’s sculpture was sited.

whilst Kerr’s sculpture appeared temporary, inmprovised and possibly even slightly irreverent, both forms demonstated an affinity with nature and culture respectively. Born in 1977, Kerr is one of the younger members of an internationally recognised generation of artists who have made exhibitions for Inverleith House in recent years, including Karla Black, Douglas Gordon, Jim Lambie, Victoria Morton, Tony Swain, Hayley and Sue tompkins and Cathy Wilkes.

The exhibition will feature new and recent work and is Kerr’s first major museum exhibition in Scotland, following a major solo exhjibition in 2009 at the Kunstverein in Bremerhaven, Germany and other recent solo exhibitions in Cologne and Glasgow.
