TAXIDERMY FOR LANGUAGE-ANIMALS: A book on stuffed words by Tine Melzer

Book Launch on Friday June 24 at 7.30 pm at Motto Zurich, Müllerstrasse 57, 8004 Zürich.
Live music performance, reading and talks with special guests from Amsterdam, London, Bern and Zürich.

A parrot can be trained to repeat the sounds we make when we speak. But what does a parrot say? ‘Taxidermy for Language-Animals’ examines language fragments from different practices – philosophy, literature, visual art – by exploiting some of our linguistic habits and tools. This book includes examples of ordinary language trapped in images. Games we play with language and games language plays with us are introduced. Like language itself, language-games are based on perception, habit and memory and are played in collaboration with others.

‘Success and Uncertainty at San Seriffe in W139, Amsterdam’.

Success and Uncertainty: book presentation + talk with Sandra Kassenaar & Bart de Baets @ Motto Zurich/Corner College on the 19th of May at 5 pm.

Success and Uncertainty

From March till July 2011 Dutch graphic designers Bart de Baets (Knokke, Belgium, 1979) and Sandra Kassenaar (Johannesburg, South Africa, 1982) were resident artists at the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo.
Due to the recent events in Egypt and especially its capitol, their initial date of arrival on the 1st of February 2011 was postponed for a month. Being stunned by the political tidal wave flooding the country, the resignation of Hosni Mubarak and the phenomenon of having a curfew — something they had only heard of in World War II stories — the designers found themselves gazing from the sidelines, not knowing how exactly to react to all of this. They asked themselves ‘Would it be arrogant to con- front the Egyptians with our assumptions? And ‘isn’t it ignorant to pretend to have a nose bleed?’
Their unclear position and the new situation the country found itself in proved to be an inspiring discovery, which eventually lead to the project Success and Uncertainty. The title of this work is an existing headline taken from the 12th of February 2011 front page of The Evansville Courier & Press, a local Indiana newspaper reporting Mubarak’s resignation as the president of Egypt.
On Wednesday June 1st 2011 a lightbox was hung outside the Townhouse Gallery that announced the start of the project and showcased the first of twenty-one posters.
During the month of June 2011, each day a new poster was presented, generating a growing exhibition. The daily changing posters could be seen both in- and outside of the gallery and — just like news- papers — showed bold statements and gruesome facts, next to light-hearted messages, such as casual observations and rumours that caught Sandra and Bart’s attention during their residency. The content provided by both therefore created a clash of information that will influence the way one reads a poster.
It was this constant dialogue between the designers that lead to Success and Uncertainty.

DIA Issue Nr. 2: Launch @ Motto Zürich, May 11th, 7pm.

LAUNCH @ MOTTO ZURICH, 4th of May 2012, 7 PM.

Tobias Spichtig: Blue, Red, and Green.
Edited by Fabian Schöneich, Tobias Spichtig, Ursula Blickle.
Contributions by Geoffrey Farmer, A.C. Kupper, Ken Lum, and Fabian Schöneich.
Co-published by Ursula Blickle Stiftung and Sternberg Press.
Design by A. C. Kupper.

Tobias Spichtig’s work is based on a discourse concerning images and their meaning—more specifically, the overwhelming presence of the media and the continuous availability of information, which contribute to the dissolution of time. His approach is based on material production. Concept and narration are abstracted and continually redefined. This creates symbolic works that present historical and contemporary as the bases of a radical presence.

The artist book by Tobias Spichtig consists of two parts: a text booklet and an image book. The booklet features an essay by Fabian Schöneich, a dialogue between Ken Lum and Tobias Spichtig, and texts by Geoffrey Farmer and A. C. Kupper.

The image book highlights the phenomena of perception focusing on the tools build to capture moments and memories. Spichtig gathered hundreds of images of cameras from auction sites, a selection of which are presented in this book. These tools to catch reality are photographed in a way as to not re-present the aim of these products, originally build to show more then we are able to see.

Blue, Red, and Green is published on the occasion of the exhibition at Ursula Blickle Stiftung, “the blue, the red, the green, the cuboid, and the pyramid,” from March 11 to April 22, 2012.

23. Februar, 20 Uhr @ MOTTO Zürich

Bauhaus Dessau + Spector Books
