The book documents the design work of author’s grandmother Kirsti Metusala at the Tallinn Experimental Plant Estoplast where she worked as a designer for 28 years (1964–1992). Estoplast was a factory mainly producing plastic lamps which were highly popular during the Soviet era and even nowadays almost every Estonian family has a lamp or two in their home or country house.

The book consists of a collection of photographs from the archive of Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design showing a selection of lamps designed by Kirsti Metusala. It is accompanied by an interview with her by Ott Metusala which is loosely based on comments of different lamp designs, and sheds light on the specifics of working as a designer in Soviet Estonia. The book also includes a short essay by Kai Lobjakas (director of Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design) discussing Soviet-Estonian design in a broader context.

Pardon Refused by Alexander Peli, Popup Press 2017
82 pages, A4, Softcover

Alexander Peli is a Canadian photographer who enjoys a raw atmosphere. The time he spent living in the Kreuzberg neighbourhood of West Berlin had a significant impact on his work and he subsequently travelled throughout Europe seeking misconduct of all kinds.
His photographs often follow a sinful narrative; one of lust, gluttony, sexuality, crime and abuse. Pardon Refused acts as a photo diary and uses the streets as a palette, capturing young artists engaged in destructive action as well as candidly documenting strange yet familiar environments. Alexander and the creatives featured in the pages of Pardon Refused don’t apologize for their behaviour and seek no redemption.
All photographs shot exclusively on 35mm film using 5 different cameras, Pardon Refused contains 66 frames spanning over 7 countries.

Erik Thys, Portraits

“The reputation of Erik Thys (b. 1961) rests on his work as a psychiatrist, not as an artist. Thys lives in Brussels where he composes music, draws, and practices in two psychiatric hospitals. On the occasion of this book, Thys invited a colleague, the British psychoanalyst Darian Leader, to reflect on his infatuation with automobiles. The drawings in this book are a small, almost pitiful, portion of the number Erik Thys provided. They came to us on all types of office paper, prescription pads, and whatever else was at hand.”

mono no aware (もののあわれ) is the first compilation to be released on PAN, collating unreleased ambient tracks from both new and existing PAN artists.

Featuring Jeff Witscher, Helm, TCF, Yves Tumor, M.E.S.H., Pan Daijing, HVAD, Kareem Lotfy, ADR, Mya Gomez, Sky H1, James K, Oli XL, Bill Kouligas, Flora Yin-Wong, Malibu, and AYYA, the compilation moves through more traditional notions of what is called ’ambient’, to incorporating wider variations that fall under the term.

“Mono no aware”, ‘the pathos of things’, also translates as “an empathy toward things”, or “a sensitivity to ephemera”. A term for the awareness of impermanence, or the transience of things. A meditation on mortality and life’s transience, ephemerality heightens the appreciation of beauty and sensitivity to their passing. In investigating the passing of time, the boundaries between memory and hallucination become blurred; between fiction and reality. The movement of time transforms into an eternal present.
