Shellpunk
Tuesday 8th August 2017
From 7pm

In the beginning was the tent. Wandering like a nomad, on the steady quest for the oases of the mind, Jürgen Kleft has battled his way through woods, steppes and frozen wastelands, has scaled vertiginous mountain tops and swum through wild rivers, crossed turbid fords, discovered the jungle and finally came to squeeze outdoor fashion in the tight corset of urbanity. Newly released, Shellpunk is the first collection of this daredevil’s adventures.

Based in Vienna, the devoted student of nature Jürgen Kleft explores the secrets of equipment and planning, of improvisation and bricolage. Since five years he enquires into the ludic set between definition and value, between use and material of the mere object. In the face of a life-threatening August sun, he now dares the descent into the Berlin asphalt jungle.

„In the end, all creation is playing, and every game holds something creative – no matter how you put it, the productive element always prevails. This is why we renounce seriousness and irony, but have decided to rush forward following our spirit of discovery and our thirst for knowledge. Nothing is linear anymore!“

Published by Textem, the monograph takes you on a comprehensive tour through Kleft’s oeuvre; its title, Shellpunk, is programmatic. „In the course of our research we became aware of a very special gure, a phenotype. The book is about a maverick, a Gaulish village, a pure robustus – or as we call him, the Shellpunk. Neither has he ever read Being and Time, nor did he follow the advices of any lifestyle guidebooks. And, most of the time, he would prefer not to.“ Akin to the Shellpunk’s predilection for new, wild situations, Jürgen Kleft acts on his sculptures: they may still be sculptures, but in the first place they are equipment for exhibitions. As occupying is an emancipatory act, his artworks bear clear signs of use.

The very generous contributions from Ondrej Cikan, Nina Gross, Raphael Dillhof, Katharina Schaar, Philip Waldner, Fransa Routin und Nikolaus Maria Kohlberger permeate and enrich the artist’s work. With his mystic tracks, David Peschka bestows a sonic aura of wildness and wilderness on the world of Jürgen Kleft.

Supplement - Exclusion Zones : Susanne Kriemann & Eva Wilson @ Motto Berlin 18.07.2017_Motto

Supplement 2 – Exclusion Zones

Susanne Kriemann & Eva Wilson

Published by Fillip

From 7pm

In conjunction with the release of Exclusion Zones, join artist Susanne Kriemann and writer Eva Wilson at Motto Berlin on Tuesday, July 18 at 7 pm for drinks and an informal discussion in the courtyard.

Exclusion Zones, the second issue in Fillip’s Supplement series, unpacks Susanne Kriemann’s photographic investigation of uraninite (or pitchblende), a radioactive, uranium-rich mineral found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (where it was mined for the Manhattan Project), Canada (in the Athabasca Basin and Great Bear Lake), and throughout Europe. Kriemann’s work focuses on the impact on the land surrounding uraninite mines operated by the now defunct mining company SDAG Wismut in the Ore Mountains of the former GDR. In Kriemann’s work, radioactive pigments drawn from wild plants growing near the vast sludge ponds at the decommissioned mine become raw photographic material: toxic, volatile, and beautiful.

Documented through Kriemann’s photographs, archival images, and a new text by Eva Wilson, Exclusion Zones charts an economic-geologic-cosmic nexus that speaks to the diverse impacts of industrial resource extraction and environmental remediation.

You Just Have to Experience It
Tuesday 4th July 2017
From 7pm
Motto Berlin

You Just Have to Experience It is a publication and event. It combines citations culled from the book Beyond Objecthood: The Exhibition as a Critical Form since 1968 to trace a history of the changing role of the spectator in art and exhibitions from Minimalism to Relational Art, and New Institutionalism to the present.

Produced on the occasion of the launch of Beyond Objecthood, this public talk in the shape of a performance reading presents a brief history of the exhibition as a critical form from the 1960s to the present, a form that inherently solicits spectators into temporal and spatial experiences and situations as indispensable components of the work.

The title refers to a statement by the American artist Tony Smith who recounts in a 1966 Artforum interview a ride on the newly minted New Jersey Turnpike, recalling a transformative nighttime experience of moving through space and time on the unmarked highway. This experience caused him to question the viability of art to represent something like that. You Just Have to Experience It uses this moment as a point of departure to explore how the criticality once posed by figures like Smith who solicited spectators into durational experiences in their work faces many challenges, not least of which is competing with the institutions that give it voice in an era when the differences between art and entertainment increasingly blur.

James Voorhies is a curator and art historian of modern and contemporary art, as well as Dean of Fine Arts and Associate Professor at California College of the Arts in San Francisco.

Bureau for Open Culture is a curatorial practice that inhabits and connects with institutions, designers and publishers to realise projects with artists and writers. The projects forge intersections among art, design, education, and consumer culture to rethink how institutions address and engage spectators.

DINGE UND DIALOGE

Book Launch @ Motto Berlin

Saturday, March 18 2017
6-9 pm

DINGE UND DIALOGE
Ed. by: Barbara Kapusta, Jenni Tischer and Rocco Pagel

The publication Dinge und Dialoge explores the relationship between the material character of things and the physical existence of the observer. The individual contributions in the publication as well as in the exhibition with the same title, that was realized at Scriptings Berlin from December 2015 until January 2016, raise questions about the particular, unique standpoint from which we can speak and perceive. The artists and writers examine the possibilities of seeing differences in objects, recognizing an object as something distinct and our  capacity of seeing and comprehending. The publication traces the proposition that where everyday objects and art objects concur, due to their similarities and differences, their status becomes productive.

With contributions from Daniel Heinrich, Kathi Hofer, Barbara Kapusta, Ulrike Köppinger, Katrin Mayer, Ulrike Müller, Rocco Pagel, Jenni Tischer and texts by Jorella Andrews and Oona Lochner.

Design: studio VIE
Edition: 300 pieces
En./Ger., 84 pages, multi-part, bound by hand, numerous illustrations in color, 21,5 x 30,5 cm, eight different softcovers designed by the participating artists.

Waldo Pardon, Alexandra Myshalov, Nadia de Vries and Adrienne Herr @ Motto Berlin
Saturday March 11th, 6-9pm

‘Class of 2017’ will be a reading in preparation for greater things. Showcasing artists and poets who have little in common, other than their enrollment and an A+ attitude. Come to a presentation of new work by 4 poets.

Most Likely to Get Out of Here:
Waldo Pardon (b. 1997, Belgium) is a writer and filmmaker. For Class of 2017, Pardon will read the first chapter of ‘The Bacterial Anchor,’ his unfinished novel. ‘The Bacterial Anchor’ is a fairy tale that revolves around 4 teenagers, densely keyworded, sinisterly branded, and their pilgrimage to an OG necropolis as soon as they get released from a juvenile detention center in Florida.

Most Likely to Crash on Your Couch:
Alexandra Myshalov (b. 1995 USA) is a writer, globalized subject, and sacrificial object. For Class of 2017, Alexandra will read “Port of call”, a rubric for narcissistic divination that combines confessional narrative and cut ups from Heavier than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain.

Most Liked by Parents:
Nadia de Vries (b. 1991, the Netherlands) is a poet and curator. She is the author of First Communion (2015), R.I.P. Nadia de Vries (2016) and Pain in Translation (forthcoming 2017). In 2016, she curated Sisternhood, a poetry anthology featuring work by European women writing in English. She lives and works in Amsterdam.

Most Likely to Succeed:
Adrienne Herr (b. 1991 USA) is a poet who works heavily with video and performance.

Gregor Mobius. DNA Semantics. Visual Representation of DNA and RNA Lecture @ Motto Berlin on 09.08.2016 @ 7:30 PM

.

This lecture is about an interpretation of DNA/RNA as visual structures with specific formal properties and relationships. Instead of the existing alphabet representation U, C, A, G and T, all the bases are expressed as five discrete values of the gray-scale:  T=white, G= light gray, A= gray, C= dark gray and U= black. Arranged in 3 x 4 matrices DNA strands as linear structures consisting of alphabet letters are converted into 2-D images with distinct visual properties. In this representation we could learn more about DNA/RNA, not only as biological (functional) structures but also as a specific language that can be expressed visually.

______________________

Gregor Mobius is a theoretician of languages that are expressed visually. His early work was in the field of Graph Theory developing an algorithm for visual representation of all planar and regular graphs. As a Fulbright scholar he received master of Science in Visual Studies at MIT with the paper “Discrete Visual Structure – Elements of Visual Grammar” (1984). A few years later, based on his thesis paper, Mobius proposed a specific representation of DNA and RNA that converts linear alphabet DNA structure into a 2D image. This work was presented to the public at the exhibition Gene(sis) that traveled through some West Coast universities: Washington University(2002), University of California, Berkeley (2003) and University of Minnesota, Minneapolis (2004). It is now for the first time presented in a comprehensive way in the book “DNA Semantics”.

During years Erik Steinbrecher sorted out daily dirt, leftovers and all kinds
of wrappings. The design of this artist book is based on photographes
of made layouts of waste, moody notes, scribbelings and liquid stains.

For this new episode the artist has decorated Motto’s vitrines in an instant and enjoyable way.

Today’s estrangement is a fully incorporated component of the modern experience, a stimulant for ‘surplus alienation’. Therefore, this issue asks what artistic, architectural and curatorial approaches to estrangement offer current discourse in organisation, aesthetics and activism. The articles unpack estrangement for the political, social and cultural sprint of our time.
