Motto is pleased to present a pop-up bookstore at Wendy’s Subway, a non-profit library and workspace located in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The store will be open Feb 19-28, 12-7 p.m., with a talk by Where’s Lucy Hunter & R. Lyon / Artwork by Kayla Guthrie at 7 p.m. on Sunday 21.02.16. This pop-up is the first in a series of curated libraries, shops, and collections displayed in the storefront of Wendy’s Subway’s new Bushwick location.

Where is a think tank and publishing platform headquartered in a shipping container in Brooklyn, NY. It is co-produced by historian Lucy Hunter and artist R.Lyon, who use the think tank as an opportunity to research information theory through experiments with the exhibition format. They publish their findings in book-length on-demand publications. For their talk at Wendy’s Subway, Hunter and Lyon will discuss, among other things: libraries, completeness, empire, and the past. Refreshments will be on hand to lighten the load. The talk will begin promptly at 8pm.

Kayla Guthrie will display a page from her most recent artist book, Sunsets Working (in collaboration with Nathan Antolik, calligraphy, and published by Bodega, New York) in the window. Kayla Guthrie is an artist working in writing, sound, and visual mediums. Her EP Blue was released in 2015 by Mixed Media Recordings. She has performed at Greene Naftali, Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Massimo de Carlo (London), and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She is the curator of Intra Phenom, a New York-based performance series presenting the work of female artists in live and durational genres.

Motto presents MAKING WORLDS: Publication launch & temporary store

Making Worlds: Art and Science Fiction is a collection of new texts by artists, curators, art historians and writers who are self-confessed science fiction fans. The linking point is the idea of science fiction as a platform for the building of alternate art histories. This collection is concerned with the ways in which science fiction might be performed, materialised or enacted within a contemporary context. Published by Surpllus.

Motto will also present a temporary bookshop within the IMA during the event, offering a selection of books, magazines, artists’ publications and editions.

SOUTH as a State of Mind grew up fast to become a bi-annual contemporary arts and culture magazine published by Epomenos Stathmos (Greece) and Phileleftheros Publishers (Cyprus) and distributed internationally. People from different -literal or metaphorical- Souths are renegotiating the southern attitude, partly to define it and partly to invent it. Possessed by a spirit of absurd authority, we are trying to contaminate the prevailing culture with ideas that derive from southern mythologies, such as the perfect climate, easy living, chaos and the dramatic temperament, to name but a few. Each 160-page issue includes a thematic section and columns inspired and named after key traits of southern life. Through our twisted – and southern – attitude, expressed through critical essays, artist projects, interviews and features, we would like to give form to the concept of the South as a state of mind rather than a set of fixed places on the map. Opening up an unexpected dialogue among neighbourhoods, cities, regions and approaches, SOUTH as a State of Mind is both a magazine and a meeting point for shared intensities.

This issue features: ARCADIA, Juergen Teller, Anafi, Martin Kippenberger, Temenos, and others

Author: Marina Fokidis (ed.)
Language: English
Pages: 160
Size: 23 x 32 cm
