In tracing some of the notions and narratives embedded in Chapters, a 16 mm film shot in Cyprus in 2012, the idea of making a book came about as an exercise, or rather an experiment, to deconstruct the film into some of its subject matters. Embarking on a new set of associations between image and subject, source and information, meaning and abstraction, this book is both a document and a memory map, tracing the beginnings of a thought, a time, an image, a place.

Chapters I-XXX is published and presented in conjunction with the exhibitions Haris Epaminonda. Chapter IV at Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice (14 March – 18 May 2014); Haris Epaminonda. Vol. XIV at Galleria Massimo Minini, Brescia (25 March – 18 May 2014).

“Le Vele di Scampia” is a futuristic housing estate in northern Naples and a Camorra battlefield. Conceived by Francesco di Salvo in the late seventies and widely recognised for their urbanistic, “Le Vele” (The Sails) were squatted by mafia families even before completion. Today the building complex is a symbol of the Camorra’s power in the Naples region and a key centre of European drug trafficking. Matteo Garrone shot his movie “Gomorra” based on the Novel by Roberto Saviano on the site in 2008. Tobias Zielony’s film “Le Vele di Scampia” from 2009 originates in this very place. Seven thousand single images, shot at night with a digital single-lens reflex camera, are used to create nine minutes of animation film. The book “Vele” is based on this animation film with an selection of 287 single images.

Film as a Form of Writing is published and distributed by Motto Books in collaboration with WIELS. The trilingual book, designed by Joris Kritis, centres around a recent in-depth interview conducted by critic Quinn Latimer with Akram Zaatari.

Akram Zaatari: ‘It is a film, a thought that took the form of an artwork. As with most of my work, it is made for time; it is both a testimony of where I come from and a mark I care to leave for the future—again as thought, not as data or records. Let’s call it alternative writing that uses the form of letters.’

Motto & OtherFilm present a temporary store and screening of Graeme Thomson and Silvia Maglioni’s In Search of UIQ at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane.

In Search of UIQ unfolds the story of Felix Guattari’s Un Amour d’UIQ both as a missing film and as a missed chance for cinema.
Slipping between documentary, fiction and essay, through the deployment of video and sound archives, letters and other documents that are enmeshed in a series of fabulations and spectral re-enactments, In Search of UIQ explores what Guattari’s cinema of the Infra-quark might have been (and may still become) in relation to his thought and clinical practice, and considers its implications in terms of the wider social and political transformations both of its own time and of the present moment.
Building a dynamic counterpoint between the unfilmed UIQ script and hypotheses of its possible manifestations, In Search of UIQ creates a phantom topography of this missing big-screen encounter involving science- fiction, schizoanalysis and molecular politics – virtually projecting UIQ towards horizons of present and future struggles as a tactical weapon of sabotage in the war of images.

To accompany the screening, Motto will present a temporary bookstore, offering a selection of books, magazines, records and artist’s publications.

‘Fábrica’, a new book and film by photographer Daniel Blaufuks, is a collection of images composed into an expanded scenery of memory, a walk through the abandoned spaces of one of the largest factories in Europe in an once flourishing industrial region, that never recovered from the loss of the textile market to the Chinese exports.

Blaufuks worked the book and the film (which comes with this edition) as a documental piece, collecting different kinds of memories, crossing old photographs, manuscripts and objects with images of the present state of the building interiors and surroundings.

The result is a reflection not only on the idea of a ‘factory’ in itself, most generic and abstract, but also about forgetting and abandonment, thus creating a significant memento about labor and the disappearance of the working class in Europe in the last century, which is one of the reasons for the present crisis in the region.

Casa de Lava – Caderno. Pedro Costa. Pierre von Kleist Editions

During the course of the production preparation for his film ‘Casa de Lava’ (1994), Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa compiled what he saw, what he read, his many ideas and images into a scrapbook instead of a screenplay.

Paintings, movie stills, letters, newspaper articles, scribbles, quotes from novels, postcards, lines of dialogue, snapshots, that guided him throughout the shooting of the film and that he continued – and finished – after returning to Lisboa.

This green covered notebook became an autonomous object, a visual record of Costa’s way of thinking. Reproducing the original book in full color, we’ve included an exclusive interview with Nuno Crespo and a text by Philippe Azoury (both in Portuguese, English and French).

Born in Lisbon in 1959, he left his course of studies in History to attend classes taught by the poet and filmmaker António Reis at the Lisbon Film School. His first film ‘O Sangue / Blood’ had its world premiere at the Mostra Cinematografica di Venezia in 1989.
‘Casa de Lava’, his second feature, shot on the Island of Fogo in Cabo Verde, was shown in Cannes, ‘Un Certain Regard’, in 1994.
His other feature films include ‘Ossos’, ‘In Vanda’s Room’ and ‘Where Does Your Hidden Smile Lie?’, on the work of Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub.
Recently he directed ‘Sweet Exorcist’, a segment of the omnibus feature ‘Centro Histórico’, with Manoel de Oliveira, Aki Kaurismaki and Victor Erice and he was of the invited artists of the Cuban Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2013.
His work has been presented in galleries and museums around the world.
