True to the artist’s motto, “Photography is a whore, never faithful, always feigning,” Gelpke uses the medium to formulate his subjective view of the world. Without being explanatory or anecdotal, he examines, with the help of the camera, the small, naturally occurring settings of everyday life. Along with Michael Schmidt and Heinrich Riebesehl, Gelpke is one of the most important writer-photographers in post-war Germany. Amok brings together for the first time images taken over a period of twelve years, from 2002 to 2014.

Over the past two years Ricarda Roggan collected and loaned from various museums and institutions objects which originally belonged to a key figure in the German cultural canon. She photographed them like the ceramic fish once owned by Ricarda Huch or Martin Heidegger’s pocket watch. These objects remain as artefacts in collections and have no intrinsic value. They only take on historical significance when they are shown in public, suffused with an awareness of the identity of their former owners. But what will remain of an object once it has been taken down from its pedestal only to disappear again in the archives? The artist locates her photography in the gap that is created between the knowing viewer and the photographed object and asks the question: Can photography preserve and convey the original auras of these everyday objects? Apocrypha was shown in 2014 in the Echo exhibition at the Kunstverein Hannover and at the Wilhelm Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen.

Space for Visual Research. Spector Books
edited by Markus Weisbeck, Mathias Schmitt, Michael Ott

The Space for Visual Research was established at the Bauhaus-University Weimar in 2013 as a workshop and laboratory for experimental research into new graphic, abstract and visual worlds. The Space’s mission is to support the exploratory urge for new aesthetics, in particular by empowering design students to create their own individual imagery. The resulting Space for Visual Research publication is a lab book, a log of visual experiments conducted using physics, chemistry, optics and reproduction technology as starting points for image production. Technical explanations open up possibilities for customized reproductions of each visual experiment presented here, while commissioned interviews and essays as well as a hand-picked bibliography render Space for Visual Research a useful reference tool for visual research generally today.

With texts by Alex Marashian, Liam Gillick, Karl Schawelka and Sophia Gräfe.

The PROVENCE Summer Reader: After Dark is the second publication of a series of books co-published by Paraguay Press and PROVENCE.

The PROVENCE Summer Reader: After Dark takes it starting point—its body—from the kind of supplementary pocket books that are attached to the summer issues of various empire lifestyle magazines. As the title suggests, this book is a reader that gathers different—not to say heterogenous—material, by authors from diverse—though mainly art-connected— backgrounds, taking over a format known for its slippery, shallow, and entertaining content. Writings, fictions, documents, and poems come along with a suite of illustrations by Siw Umsonst. For a brief moment, this book was going to be a part of PROVENCE’s (pen)ultimate Issue C dedi- cated to Criticism Now. And then … in or out. We recalled the moment in history (was it the mid or the late 90s?), when art magazines not only featured sec- tions with the best of the year, but also with the worst shows and artists of the year. It was Richard Pryor, according to Lane Relyea, who stated: “I never met any- body who said when they were a kid, I wanna grow up and be a critic.” Soon the title shifted to Dark Matter, which turned criticism to social relations, but it echoed other engagements and expectations. As writing eludes the purposes of criticism, and comes to favor stories, emotions, and open air over judg- ment and in-depth studies, it was eventually replaced by After Dark. After Dark is also a series of computer screensaver software introduced in 1989 by Berkeley Systems for the Apple Macintosh, and for Microsoft Windows in 1991. It is—or was—a means to avoid switching your computer off and to maintain its functionality while not at work, keeping the system running. With the invention of laptops sleep mode in the late 90s, which made turning devices off unnecessary, the then famous Aquatic Realm, Flying Toasters, and Slide Show screensavers vanished. Many of the contributions to this Summer Reader attempt to engage a problem of their own or perform their authors’ participation in the networked, social, and communicational spaces that are shared with cul- tural production at large. They bear witness to nights of labor turned into proletarian days—even though they were written for a book supposed to be read un- der the sun. Or (maybe) exactly because of that: who would dare to take a tablet or a laptop to the beach?

Alessandro Rabottini, Andrea Bellini, Martin Clark (Eds.). Mousse Publishing.

Despite a prolific and diverse practice, Robert Overby (1935–93) remains one of the best-kept secrets in post-war American art. While rarely exhibiting during his lifetime, he nonetheless built up an extraordinary, multifaceted body of work encompassing sculpture, installation, painting, photography, print and collage.

This monograph is published on the occasion of “Robert Overby: Works 1969-1987”, the first survey exhibition of the artist’s work to be organized in Europe. Edited by Alessandro Rabottini —in collaboration with Andrea Bellini and Martin Clark—it has been conceived, from the outset, as a joint project of four partner institutions: Centre d’Art Contemporain, Genève; GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Bergamo; Bergen Kunsthall, and Le Consortium, Dijon.
