Traces. Yuen-yi Lo. Mosses

Lo Yuen Yi is an artist that is hard to define. She specialises in using text to document artists and their creative endeavours and using drawing to deconstruct and reconstruct both words and concepts. Traces is divided into two parts—words and drawings—but the same questions underlie the two: who am I? What is art? What is the essence of memories? Each question is independent yet intertwined. 



The drawings are a collection of pencil sketches, including portraits of a hand, mad women speaks featuring frames, work in progress which records the making of a hardbound book, cosmos-shells unearthed in my garden collecting shells from soil, tools Dad remade with tools as the subject etc. From defining oneself, to symbols of doubt, to capturing the broken traces left by memories. 



The words are made up of seven essays which start with a discussion about the space for creativity and end at fixation on cities. As everything disappears, Lo asks: what are memories? Are there any left? In response, she replies:



The meaning of memory is within each person’s experience

It has its own language

Your memories are not mine

My memories are not bigger than his or hers

This edition of ZIGG is interested in exploring sex as an evolutionary psychology. It brings together contributions from a network of friends, peers, colleagues who have engaged or encountered the makers of ZIGG through intellectual, psychosexual vibrations. It includes text messages, illustrations, drawings, poetry, code, conversation, rants, and essays.

Kai Althoff goes with Bernard Leach. Emily Butler (Ed.). Whitechapel Gallery

German artist Kai Althoff (born 1966) is renowned as a figurative painter and creator of all-encompassing poetic environments that incorporate textiles, photographs, drawings and artifacts. Althoff draws from a wide range of literary, cultural and artistic influences in his work, and for his unique display at Whitechapel Gallery in London he pays tribute to British potter Bernard Leach (1887–1979), selecting around 20 of Leach’s ceramic vessels and tiles from the 1920s onward to be displayed in specially designed vitrines.

The Playground Talk. Romana Ruban

In her exhibition ‘The Playground Talk’, closing her residency at Officina Neukölln, Romana Ruban creates the echo of a dialogue between kids that she overheard during a trip to Odesa. The playground chitchat consists of dreams about the neighbor’s car and is carved into a zine with simple but lighthearted illustrations. The linocut prints appeal to both the inner child and the responsible adult. With these kids’ quotes, the artist wishes to show not only a playful childhood and the joy of simple things, but she also wants to bring up a few questions. Are we dreaming in the right direction? What do we stand for in the end?

The idea for a zine came up in 2021, right after the trip, but was on hold. Officina’s residency for artists in exile gave new layers and meanings to the imprint of the peaceful past, as Romana fled Ukraine to Germany after the full-scale invasion of Russia.

Λ (Lambda). Micol Assaël. NERO

Λ (Lambda) is an artist book by Micol Assaël which collects a series of 72 drawings made by the artist starting in 2011 as a reflection on light.

The work well exemplifies Assaël’s interest in natural phenomena and in their unpredictability which often makes it impossible for the artist to control the work. The drawings “describe” biomorphic figures inscribed within circles, and are based on the attempt to define a blot of color despite its constant modification over time. Unlike previous series of drawings, Λ (Lambda) is made with orange enamel and blue ink.

The drawings, conceived to be charged with light, have been exposed to direct, very intense sources of illumination. The title Λ (Lambda) alludes to the symbol used in physics for the wavelength of light.

Har Shaam Shaheen Bagh is an ode to the infinite courage and resilience of the women of Shaheen Bagh, Delhi, who sat in protest for a 100 days and nights. A book of photographs, drawings, songs, letters and other material gathered as a record of the iconic protest, marks an extraordinary moment in the political and contemporary history of India.

In December 2019 a small group of Muslim women from the working-class neighbourhood of Shaheen Bagh, came out of their homes and sat down in protest, occupying a stretch of one of Delhi’s busiest highways. They were standing up against the Citizenship Amendment Act, which was designed to strip the Constitution of India of its right to religious equality. This peaceful sit-in began in December 2019 until the pandemic sent India into lockdown, and the state used this as an opportunity to destroy and dismantle all traces of the protest. This book serves as urgent and crucial evidence of a time that is systematically being erased from our collective memory.

From the women of Standing Rock and Black Lives Matter, The Dandi March and Chipko Movement, and those at the front lines of India’s non-violent protests, this book is an act of remembrance that preserves the powerful legacy of women at the forefront of historic revolutions.

“I don’t remember, but since I was very young, drawing is one habit of mine. After many changes and attempts, I worked on the same type of drawing for about six or seven years. I made a book out of some of the drawings I worked on. Of course, personal things will also be reflected but there is no topic and answer. I just do the act of drawing habitually. It can be personal or universal. It looks like a familiar person or a familiar character shape, or it is not. You can also watch fairy tales and cartoons. Or it may seem like an extreme reality. Or lines and lumps. Or just paper and graphite. It seems to be full, or it is empty, repetition and flow, or there is a difference and disconnection. And it was planned or happened to happen to be. It is constantly familiar and unfamiliar between everything and something. The size, paper and texture of the book are also parts of this context.”
