The Space Age. Aleksandra Mir. Sternberg Press.

On Saturday 28 August, 1999, against a background of puffing industrial plumes, a pinkish-blue sky, and the sound of bongo drum beats, Aleksandra Mir, dressed in a smart white dress and with American flag in hand, scaled the side of a moonscape of sand dunes and makeshift craters to become the first woman on the moon. The performance First Woman on the Moon marked the beginning of Mir’s exploration of outer space as she staged a moon landing by transforming a Dutch beach into the moon’s surface using the help of local people and heavy machinery.

Mir’s projects offer her own take on popular cultural myths and historical events, by combining religious iconography with NASA imagery or symbols of space travel. Her work reflects on these events that span half a millennium of human—mostly male-dominated—quest, transforming or deconstructing them into a make-believe world of her own. Mir resists and modifies; her work creates its own authenticity and truth.

The Space Age consists of seven fold-out posters and a text by Martin Herbert. The publication coincides with the exhibition at M – Museum Leuven which encompasses fourteen years of Mir’s career (1999–2013).

The Artist’s House – From Workplace to Artwork. Kirsty Bell. Sternberg Press.

The artist’s house is a prism through which to view not only the artistic practice of its inhabitant, but also to apprehend broader developments in sculpture and contemporary art in relation to domestic architecture and interior space. Based on a series of interviews and site visits with living artists about the role of their home in relation to their work, Kirsty Bell looks at the house as receptacle, vehicle, model, theater, or dream space. In-depth analyses of these contemporary examples—including Jorge Pardo, Mirosław Bałka, Danh Vo, Gregor Schneider, Frances Stark, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Paweł Althamer, Mark Leckey, Monika Sosnowska, Gabriel Orozco, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Andrea Zittel—are contextualized by key artists of the twentieth century such as Kurt Schwitters, Alice Neel, Edward Krasiński, Carlo Mollino, and Louise Bourgeois. A two-way flow from the domestic arena to the exhibition space becomes apparent, in which the everyday has a significant role to play in the merging of such developments as installation art, relational aesthetics, expanded collage, and performance art.

Dhondt’s method of working is intensive and comprises various stages of documentation. Via Google Maps she marks places where she leaves her sculptures in public spaces. The locations of both her creations and her photography can be traced through the coordinates via internet and physical maps. Her consistent and methodical way of working, along with the creative process that takes place exclusively in the outdoor space as well as the documenting of that process is firmly rooted in movements such as Land Art and conceptual art of the 1960s and 70s. Dhondt’s work is a kind of monument to temporariness. The constructions are based on the dimensions of personal space. These spatial demarcations and primary sculptures become altered into nomadic symbols, so to speak, and function as poetic podia for resistance. Dhondt is resisting the current financial and, above all, moral crisis with a call for humaneness and a search for meaning.

Lara Dhondt (Turnhout, 1979) lives in Antwerp and works with the urban landscape. She makes use of various media in her work, such as photography, installation, video, typography and performance.

For several years, Paul Kooiker and Erik Kessels have organized evenings for friends in which they share the strangest photo books in their collections. The books shown are rarely available in regular shops, but are picked up in thrift stores and from antiquaries. The group’s fascination for these pictorial non-fiction books comes from the need to find images that exist on the fringe of regular commercial photo books. It’s only in this area that it’s possible to find images with an uncontrived quality. This constant tension makes the books interesting. It’s also worth noting that these tomes all fall within certain categories: the medical, instructional, scientific, sex, humour or propaganda. Paul Kooiker and Erik Kessels have made a selection of their finest books from within this questionable new genre. Incredibly small photobooks is the second volume (after Terribly awesome photobooks) showing this amazing collection.

Celluloid Pathways Into the Land of Dreams. Björn Engberg. Moon Space Books.

A photographic novel by Björn Engberg about a trip across the Atlantic, through North America and into the subconscious.

Run far away, from the thrill
Over the hill, leave the chill
Coyotes roar “Hello-hello!”
And all you see is mellow-yellow
You find the sand, find the sun
Find the cave, where it begun

Here the poison tastes so good
With orange drops from the hood
Your mind must turn all so strange
Must get lost, out of range
Magic tricks can’t save you now
It all twirls up, you hear Ka-pow!
