This book, which was conceived a number of years ago, is about a short period in the history of Moscow art, right before the real-estate market obliged several artists’ groups to leave their studios.

It was after a guest-teaching period at the National Academy of Fine Art in Oslo that Larissa Zvezdotchotova brought us to Trekhprudny Lane in 1993. That is where ten young artists had for two years been living and working in an apartment block, where they had carried through an unbroken series of events and installations every Thursday at 19.00. Gradually this had developed into a central point in Moscow’s art life – a literal and witty answer to the prevailing art life situation and a number of ideas and masterpieces of western art. Or as Ter-Oganian, the protagonist of the group, puts it: “Great art in one place, soup in Russia.”

The Moscow based critic Ekaterina Dyogot has on our request written an introductory essay about the events at Trekhprudny. In addition she has written captions to 36 selected actions to clarify contexts that could pass by a western public.

This book is a fragment, nevertheless it presents the question: Can we afford to do without all the unexpected viewpoints and standpoints coming from the Russians in the discussion about the art of today?

The Subjective Object, Anna-Sophie Springer (Ed.), published by K Verlag.

THE SUBJECTIVE OBJECT engages with the controversial site of the ethnographic museum and the role of the archive. In particular, the 1920’s photographic archive of the indigenous people of India by the German physical anthropologist and racist theorist Egon von Eickstedt (1892–1965) serves as a case study for an investigation into the role of historical artifacts in light of contemporary political situations. The nine interviews with curators, artists, anthropologists, and social workers provide the core of the book actively discussing the complicated issues around the archive’s function in producing knowledge. An annotated thread of images serves as a critical apparatus addressing the visual history of ethnographic display and classification practices—both in the scientific field as well as the cultural field at large. Questioning the assumption that the archive presents the “fact” of the “Other,” three literary texts counterpoint the inherent fantasies within scientific research. Just as the book begins with an archive—the Eickstedt photos—the book ends with a new archive—photos of the exhibition “The Subjective Object—(Re)Appropriating Anthropological Images” at the GRASSI Ethnographic Museum of Leipzig—illustrating the project’s desire to not only engage with the history of display but also to propose a future of display strategies and social engagement.

Amikejo, Latitudes (ed), Mousse Publishing.

Amikejo has been produced in coordination with a series of four exhibitions by artist duos, curated by Latitudes (Max Andrews & Mariana Cánepa Luna) at Laboratorio 987, the project space of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, MUSAC. The title refers to a tiny state that existed from 1908 to 1920 between the Netherlands, Belgium and present-day Germany, founded to foster more effective international communication through the synthetic language Esperanto – Amikejo means ‘place of friendship’ in Esperanto. This episode-place was a unique synthesis of cartography, language, nationhood, politics, economics and subjectivity, and is evoked as a twin site to Laboratorio 987, lending its name and conceptual borders to the exhibition series and the book.

An Individual Note @ Motto Melbourne

On the occasion of its opening, Motto Melbourne presents An Individual Note – a series of performances, discussions and lectures highlighting the role of sound, and notions regarding its creation, manipulation, appropriation and representation, within the context of contemporary practice. This project takes as its reference point the book An Individual Note of Music, Sound and Electronics, by BBC Radiophonic Workshop founder Daphne Oram. The series aims to create an informal discourse regarding the ways in which the theoretical aspects of electronic music production might relate to practice, across a range of contemporary disciplines and genres. The series will be complemented by the exhibition of a growing archive that documents these discussions and performances.

The production of publicity, and in a wider sense of a public, is among the key strategies of any exhibition. Publications play a crucial role here. By editing and publishing the magazine Displayer, students come to better understand central questions of exhibition design and curatorial practice, and can make contact with authors outside the school. Displayer is a continuation of students’ practical and theoretical work in a public, published form. Historic and contemporary exhibitions, guest lectures and seminar projects can here be investigated in greater depth, with seminar themes worked through in interviews and by re-editing texts for publication. Following the seminar’s intensive investigation and discussion, the final publication itself becomes a kind of exhibition space for ongoing questions and concerns.

In Winnipeg, der Provinzhauptstadt des kanadischen Bundesstaates Manitoba, hat Tobias Zielony das Leben von jugendlichen Gangmitgliedern indigener Herkunft fotografisch festhalten. Die amerikanische Autorin Andrea Hiott fuhr ein Jahr nach dem Fotografen nach Winnipeg und traf einige der Jugendlichen wieder. Sie sind die Nachkommen mehrerer Generationen kanadischer Ureinwohner, die in staatliche und kirchliche Assimilierungsprogramme gezwungen und von ihrer indigenen Herkunft abgeschnitten wurden. Heute orientieren sich die »First Nations« wieder an alten, aber auch an neuen Mythen von Stammeskultur, Heldentum und indigenem Widerstand. Wiedergefundenes Familienwissen, Hollywoodfilme und die modernen Gangkulturen der amerikanischen Global Cities liefern dafür Stilvorlagen. Sie greifen nach Versatzstücken neuer Erzählungen über sich selbst, in denen sich Realität und Fiktion kaum unterscheiden lassen. Unsicher, zärtlich und auch stolz suchen sie vor der Kamera des Fotografen ihr eigenes Bild.

Spector Books verlegt mit »Manitoba« die Publikation zu Zielonys bislang umfangreistem Projekt. Dessen 50 Fotografien ergänzen ein Film sowie ein Hörspiel, das auf dem Reisebericht Andrea Hiotts basiert.

»Manitoba« ist noch bis zum 15. April bei KOW in der Brunnenstraße 9, Berlin, zu sehen.

En novembre 2009, Conny Purtill vient de Philadelphie en résidence sur la Maison Flottante du Cneai afin d’explorer la collection Fmra. Il intervient dans dix publications selon un même processus qui consiste à remplacer la page 11/12 par une page gravée et dessinée par lui. Les pages extraites de ces dix livres sont rassemblées dans un dossier et constituent l’oeuvre “10, 11, and 12”. En parallèle, Conny Purtill réalise des interventions à peine perceptibles au crayon dans une sélection d’ouvrages de la collection Fmra. Les livres sont réinsérés tels quels dans la collection, sans mention particulière. Des aiguilles dans une bottes de foin…
