The soft invisible weight of your absence takes so much space. Aimé Dabbadie

“The soft invisible weight of your absence takes so much space” is a zine and an installation compiling photographs, paintings, prints, fabrics, visual poems, and texts exploring and diving in the themes of absence and grief.

Delving into what seems insignificant at first, such as unreadable notes, blurry photos, missed shots and faceless portraits, Aimé threads different multi-layered attempts to grasp the space that remains where absence begins. Haunted by the influence of writers such as Marguerite Duras, Sarah Kane, Jean Luc Lagarce and Fabrice Melquiot, they explore the different feelings tied to absence and grief relating to the concepts of identity, gender, relationships, family, the body and collective imaginaries. The result is visions of paradoxes, in-betweens and nonplaces, suspended outside of time and space, flying out of a stranger’s hands.

Ugly Duckling. Alex Anyaegbunam. Otto Resource powered by Innen

In Alex Anyaegbunam’s work, photographs don’t just document moments, they manifest memory. In “Ugly Duckling,” Anyaegbunam’s show with Otto Resource c/o Adam Barnard, Polaroid portraits of the artist from childhood to young adulthood explore the formation of his identity at the same time that they convey how these captured moments made him feel.

Instances of double-exposure and visual distortion combined with illustrations in paint and Sharpie imbue each photo with an emotional realism, which gives insight into the subjective experience, sometimes of the photographed subject, sometimes of reflective artist, sometimes of both.

The recurring motif of a red, flaming, shonen-anime wig becomes a symbol of sorts for, among other things, creativity and boyhood. Polaroid portraits of intimate others — at times alongside the artist, at times alone — also demonstrate the relationship that experiences with and memories of others can inform notions of selfhood.

The fanzine comes with a set of stickers.

“Panoramas: everything is connected. All PANORAMAS photos were taken with iPhone 6s and 7. When I first used iPhone in 2017 I accidentally took a picture with the panorama function. Thereafter I’ve been recording panoramas of every scenery I want to remember. This book is my iPhone panorama records for the past five years. While working on this project I realized that everything was connected. Scenes and time that flow into small memories eventually connect with each others and are part of my persona.”

Locomotion is a one-off travel zine with contributions from art-related actors, engaging with modes and troubles of travel. Featuring contributions by Samar al Summary, Fully Funded Residencies, Burak Taşdizen, Azar Pajuhandeh, Ipek Burçak, Ada Karayel and Eren Ileri. It is a wandering around (im)mobilities of non-humans, artist residencies as a way of survival, road and driving memories, heatwaves and meltings, and commercial space travel.

Locomotion is designed by Ada Karayel, and co-faciliated by Eren Ileri. Illustrations are made by Goodnewsforbadguys.

The magazine comes with a sticker set; a fly and the Locomotion logo.

From Editor’s and Publisher’s Note:

“…When things started to resemble sci-fi dystopia, the absurdity of writing applications for artist residencies at that time has triggered us to have a look at the issue of traveling more deeply and we found ourselves digging up different holes that leave threads for you to connect…”

“…Before we came to the idea of making a magazine, we were speculating on various issues entangled with travel: the materiality of roads, and their related social meanings, debates that can be categorized as anti-travel or travel skepticism and slowing down, inactivity or motionlessness, and also the luxury of not-to-travel by choice…”

“…Since this publication took its start with the pandemic, attentiveness towards some of the matter that are partly in our bodies, and to others that are not, brought us to the word locomotion, which means not just the motion of the human and the living but also of the non-living and the non-human, of which you will find pieces scattered all over the magazine.”
