Jean-Luc Manz’s paintings, which he has been making since 1977, could be described as geometric abstractions. However, they share very little with the Swiss Concrete art tradition. They refer instead to the practices of John M Armleder and Helmut Federle. Their geometric vocabulary is infused with expressive stances and appropriation, as if they wanted to recreate, through the act of painting, a relationship with the world. Manz’s notebooks, published here for the first time in this 1,000-page volume, prove that his compositions are anchored in a system of correspondence with the art of the past—from Islamic decorative art to Egyptian memories, everyday encounters, and his personal life.

The Best of Keren Cytter/The Worst of Keren Cytter is the first comprehensive publication of the video screenplays written by Keren Cytter (born 1977). Cytter has been widely heralded for her video work, which challenges conventions of narrative cinema through its pared-down style, deliberately kitschy effects, knowing manipulation of familiar genres and fractured storylines. For her exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the artist invited the exhibition’s two curators, Jacob Fabricius and Naomi Beckwith, to read and categorize transcripts of the entire body of her video work. The curators then debated the merits of every screenplay, dividing them into the “best” or “worst” of Cytter’s work. This two-volume publication anthologizes all of Cytter’s screenplays and includes short essays by the two curators.

In June 1972, Mario Bellini arrived in New York to take part in ‘Italy, the New Domestic Landscape’, the MoMA exhibition where he was to present his ‘Kar-a-sutra’, the very first MPV, a revolutionary space-mobile. Once the show was over, Bellini set off on a journey-cum-enquiry into the American way of living. He was accompanied by Francesco Binfaré, Davide Mosconi and a ‘safe- conduct’ issued by the MoMA which was to open many doors: those of Andy Warhol’s studio in New York, of Hugh Hefner’s Mansion in Chicago, and of Beverly Hills villas occupied by hippies. Bellini plotted his itinerary day by day, moving among the Mormons of Salt Lake City, the utopia of Arcosanti, and villages of mobile homes along the roads of the Midwest. His Hasselblad was to record the dreams and hopes of an unexpected America, one which perhaps no longer exists.
Mario Bellini is internationally renowned as an architect and designer. He has received the Compasso d’Oro eight times, and other prestigious architecture awards including the Medaglia d’oro awarded by the President of the Italian Republic for his contribution to furthering design and architecture in the world (2004). He was the editor of the magazine “Domus” from 1985 to 1991. 25 of his works belong to the permanent design collection of the New York MoMA, which dedicated a personal retrospective to him in 1987. The manifold buildings he has designed include the Portello Trade Fair district in Milan, the Villa Erba Exhibition Centre in Cernobbio (Como), the Tokyo Design Centre in Japan, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the headquarters of the Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt, the Verona Forum complex, the City History Museum in Bologna, the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre in Paris, and the new Milan Convention Centre, the largest in Europe. He has various projects at the design stage, which include the “New Eco-City” of Zhenjiang in China and a large Residential, Cultural and Sports Complex in Qatar.

According to legend, the house in which Maria received the apparition of the Angel of Annunciation, the Santa Casa, was relocated by angels from Nazareth first to Dalmatia and then to Loreto. Since the 15th century, the Santa Casa of Loreto has become one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites. In 2009, the artists Davide Cascio and Christian Kathriner developed a work that refers back to this legend. They created two wall carpets for the pilgrimage chapel of Our Lady of Hergiswald — a replica of the Santa Casa in Loreto. The wall carpets, Jacquard tapestries, were woven on a CAD-operated loom in Flanders. The tapestries show a group of people apparently resting at the edge of a riverbed. The large-scale publication presents this temporary spatial installation by Davide Cascio and Christian Kathriner in striking color images that at the same time absorb the opulent decoration of the Baroque chapel of Hergiswald and simultaneously refract it within a contemporary aesthetics.

Taking the work of Sanja Iveković as a point of departure to discuss urgent matters in feminism today, Sanja Iveković: Unknown Heroine – A Reader gathers commissioned essays by key feminist voices who contributed to a conference titled ‘23%’*, which was held on the occasion of the exhibition Sanja Iveković: Unknown Heroine, curated by Lina Džuverović at Calvert 22 Gallery and the South London Gallery (December 2012 – February 2013). The conference took place at the Royal College of Art, London and was organised in collaboration with the Courtauld Institute of Art’s Research Forum.

*The conference title, ‘23%’, was drawn from a research report compiled by the Fawcett Society, the UK’s leading campaign for women’s equality and rights. On average, women in the UK earn 15% less than men. In London, in January 2013, the pay gap stood at 23%.
