The Reading of Time in the Text of Nature by Klaus Merkel

Photographer and artist Klaus Merkel continues to search for–and record in striking black-and-white photographs–structures in nature and architecture that, no matter where they are, exhibit overlapping patterns and configurations, significant deviations and parallels, and resonate in juxtaposition. In this extension of that program, he has turned his attention to stones, rock landscapes, as well as man made objects, such as temples, ruins and churches

Temporary Discomfort by Jules Spinatsch

Temporary Discomfort documents Davos, Genoa, New York and Evian/Geneva in a transitory state of emergency lock-down during the global economic summits. It combines different photographical genres: landscape photography, photojournalism and police photography, though here with the camera lens turned back at the security forces

Vortrag / Buchvernissage
Heidrun Holzfeind: Mexico 68/CU
Freitag, 16.7.2010, 19 Uhr
http://www.corner-college.com/Veranstaltungen/1279231200

100 Chairs in 100 Days and its 100 Ways by Martino Gamper

Martino Gamper made a chair a day in a bid to make 100 chairs in 100 days. Using a stock pile of discarded and donated chairs, Gamper created his new chairs from elements of existing ones. By deconstructing the chair he gains a new insight into its construction and use of materials which informs the creation of the new design. The process is immediate and spontaneous, like sketching in three dimensions

Epistle To Westphalia by Super A

In his newest book the Melanesian theorist and theologian SUPER A presents an insightful chronicle into the future of cargo cult. Extracted from the practices of his home island, New Hanover, SUPER A (formerly known as the alter ego of stunt legend Evil Knievel. ) elaborates on the basics of the cult and shows the difficult implications of simulation and over-identification today. While under the influence of US Army in the mid 40’s and 50’s the islanders of Melanesia developed an ostentatious practice mimicking the US culture, worshipping the wealth (cargo!) of the foreigners in the hope of its return. What became hereafter ridiculed by many for its naivety, the islanders cleared the indigenous forests, built faked airplanes and landing strips, even elected Lyndon Johnson to be their president, poses a challenge to the dialectics of economy and creativity, but is a model for marketing and political resistance, as Prof. Dr. Liebl shows in his epilogue. In this step-to-step manifesto the book draws from the rich heritage of cargo cult and shows its renewed promise for the 21st century. The book combines a richly illustrated part and an epistle to the land of Westphalia (Germany). For anyone involved directly or indirectly with cargo cult, this highly acclaimed book is essential reading.

Möhren in Athen by Erik Steinbrecher

For his show Wind in Athens/Möhren in Athen Erik Steinbrecher left Berlin for Athens, his suitcase packed with carrots. The artist’s art odyssee began. His chosen site for an intervention was the National Archaeological Museum. During his visit in the collection Steinbrecher installed single carrots in the exposition spaces; close to sculptures and artfacts, on bases and behind walls. For this publication Steinbrecher overworked these documents making up the images with cancarrots.

Ron Jude Postcards

Shot over the past fifteen years in places as culturally and geographically diverse as Italy and Louisiana, these photographs do more to foil the idea of travelogue than support it. Inverting the usual role of the “picture postcard”, these images favor the minutia of private experience over generalized representations of the well-known. Through pictures of deritus–the failed, the broken, and the lame–Jude is looking for something that echoes the texture of actual experience, and the small, hidden epiphanies that reside there
