all-story-vol13-no-3

In 1997, Francis Ford Coppola launched Zoetrope: All-Story, a quarterly magazine devoted to the best new short fiction and one-act plays. Along with new stories, each edition of the magazine presents a Classic Reprint—a previously published short story that inspired a great film—to illustrate the narrative relationship between the art forms. Zoetrope: All-Story is also an art magazine, as the editors invite a different contemporary artist to illustrate and design each issue. Past guest designers include William Eggleston, Zaha Hadid, Julian Schnabel, Wim Wenders, Laurie Anderson, Peter Sellars, Helmut Newton, David Bowie, Gus Van Sant, Tom Waits, Ed Ruscha, David Byrne, Kiki Smith, Wayne Thiebaud, Chip Kidd, Yves Béhar, and Mike Figgis.

The newest print issue is soon available in Motto Berlin, with also selected back issues.

The theme of the nineth issue of Here and There is HER LIFE. It deals with the various factors that make up the many waves in a woman’s life, such as working, becoming pregnant, giving birth. The colorful stories told by Elein Fleiss, Laetitia Bena, Yurie Nagashima, Miranda July, Midori Araki and Aiko Yamada, reflect each of their lives.

Nakako Hayashi writes: “There are various lives, various moments and various emotions. I wish to capture the ripples of emotion in our daily lives as seeds, right before they turn into fluff and float away. I wish to keep observing what grows from there. I guess this may be what I want to do with Here and There.”

SANPO is a Japanese word meaning walking around without purpose. The secando feature SANPO includes writing by two Japanese artists; Kanehito Koganezawa and Shimabuku.

During a space of three years, Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs traveled several months through the United States, working ‘on the road’ on the photo series The Great Unreal. The photographic work deals with reality and the fabrication of reality. The geography of America serves as both setting and fertile ground for the examination.

Mysticism and demystification are important aspects in this process, as is working with a rich inventory of visual icons that can be continually deconstructed and manipulated. The working method of both photographers is based on interventions prescribed mostly by happenstance and change. Through repetition and associative placement, the sometimes crude, sometimes subtle interventions begin to link to one another, establishing an exciting transformation of reality that only hesitatingly reveals itself to the viewer.

Together with book designers Megi Zumstein and Claudio Barandun, what emerged is an unmitigated picture book that makes a visual journey possible without any instructions. It comprises narrative image sequences that approximate the curiosity and restlessness of being on the move and, at the same time, depict associative connections with the American landscape.

Ai Weiwei: Portrait of a Critical Mind
“I think just walking in the other direction is a smart choice.”

Ai Weiwei is widely viewed as the most important fine artist in China
today. The outspoken critic of the politcal system in China gained
widespread attention not only with his installations and projects for,
among others, Documenta XII and Haus der Kunst, but also his
architectural projects such as the Beijing Olympics Stadium and his
social engagement.

With mono.kultur, Ai Weiwei talked about the fine arts boom in China,
the mind games of architecture and why political activity can be a
work of art.

Piccolo Volume II

This publication follows up the 100 chairs in 100 days book by Martino Gamper. He’s been busy making more chairs, tables to go with, food to eat and additional pieces for the feet, buttocks and eyes. Martino also cut up Ponti—sorry Gio!—resulting in second-hand furnitures which are new to all of us (including to Gio).

Every Colour by Itself

What is exciting is that it is like a ladybird book but the size of a National Geographic magazine. It is stuffed with 96 pages of incredibly colourful fluorescent pictures of naked men and ladies sculptures by Francis Upritchard. As sculptures have a tendency to show a unique view in publications, they decided to go full frontal and backside for most, side view for some.
