Spike #29

Spike is a quarterly magazine for contemporary art that was founded by the artist Rita Vitorelli in 2004, published in Vienna. The magazine offers new, illuminating, and unconventional perspectives on art and contemporary trends. The inclusion of many voices from the art world, subjective points of view and a first hand directness grant a new proximity to reality.
The heart of the magazine are major contributions on five artists whose work we consider decisive for current artistic debates. In essays, critics from various backgrounds write on contemporary art and analyze developments in contemporary culture.
The art world of Eastern Europe is highly present in Spike; the close interlinking between art and life, art and society, and the existential contribution made by Eastern European artists bear an affinity to the spirit of Spike.
Spike believes that the world can be transformed by art, not just through its mere existence, but by bringing its ideas to the most possible people.

Metropolis M, #5: Survival.

Metropolis M, #5: Survival.

For years, post-colonialism in art was dominated by a heavy, politically correct discourse, generally at a high intellectual level. The debate primarily took place in other countries, such as France and England, where important exhibitions were organized that played a large part in guiding how people think about their colonial past.

In the Netherlands, very little has been said about our colonial past, certainly in the visual arts, where museums and other institutions have seldom broached the issue with any seriousness. Only in the last few years does there seem to be a change in this, thanks to a new generation of artists and curators who have the courage to investigate the subject with a certain amount of lightness. Obtrusive moralizing is avoided, and although one is always still in search of confrontation, there is also space for keeping things in a different perspective.
This fall, De Appel and SMBA are devoting exhibitions and events to this question. Metropolis M also pauses to take a look. A society that is so imbued with its own past, as we are, cannot ignore the dubious side of its history.

This issue also includes a follow-up to the protests expressed in the previous issue. Where it loudly voiced objections to the decimated budgets in the cultural sector, we pause here under the title ‘Survival’ to examine the background of the cutbacks and look at how we can best respond to them. Strategic analyses are interspersed with tips about how to be stronger in moving forward, out of the crisis.

Finally, we are extremely pleased that Tirdad Zolghadr, an Iranian writer and curator based in New York, has agreed to write columns for us over the coming year. His beautiful first contribution immediately sets high expectations.

Street Value: Shopping, Planning and Politics at Fulton Mall. Rosten Woo. Meredith TenHoor. Damon Rich.

Downtown Brooklyn’s Fulton Mall is one of the most bustling public spaces in New York City. A colossus of commerce, itwelcomes over one hundred thousand shoppers daily and ranks among the most profitable commercial real estate in the entire country, and is also home to some of the city’s most recognized institutions, including cheesecake mecca Junior’s, that have been immortalized in song, film, and culture. Despite its historic link to Brooklyn’s past and its financial success as a shopping district, Fulton Street is rarely celebrated in New York. The street’s hand-painted signs, customized jewelry, rare sneakers, mega-church, and vendors offer a special sampling of noncorporate commerce, but many consider its sensorial and physical density a sign of blight. Misunderstandings about race, class, and profitability have led Fulton Street to be characterized as run-down, dangerous, or underutilized, and as a result it has been subject to nearly continuous renovation. Recently rezoned and becoming increasingly attractive to national chain stores, Fulton Street is once again poised for big changes.

Street Value is a challenge to creatively rethink the planning and urban design of Fulton Street and other urban shopping districts. Street Value explores the mall’s historical and contemporary conditions through original essays, oral histories, new and archival photographs, historic documents, and interviews with key planners, developers, city officials, historians, and activists from the 1960s to the present. Street Value probes the ideology of redevelopment and demonstrates how commercial, governmental, and activist forces have coalesced to produce one of Brooklyn’s most legendary public spaces.
