Joe Hamilton: Hyper Geography book launch and screening @ Motto IMA. 13.11.2014.

Motto and IMA is pleased to present the Australian launch of Joe Hamilton’s artist book, Hyper Geography, published by Jean Boîte Éditions, 2014. The publication, a four meter long unfoldable leporello, includes a previously unpublished essay by Nicolas Thély – Landscapes Without Roots: In Search of the Foundations of an Interconnected World.

The launch will be accompanied by a looped projection of selected works by the artist.

The Reminder. Behnam Sadighi. Motto Books

This publication is part of the project The Reminder by Behnam Sadighi, conceived in the frame of the fellowship programme MOP CAP 2013 with an exhibition at The Showroom from September 8 – 13, 2014 and the residency programme Delfina Foundation in London.

From December 2013 to October 2014 Behnam Sadighi worked closely with curator and theorist Doreen Mende to develop his The Reminder project for the MOP CAP 2013 Winner’s Exhibition. Prior to the exhibition Behnam undertook a three-month residency at the Delfina Foundation. As part of the Prize a series of events including an exhibition, a panel discussion and a book launch formed Behnam Saidghi’s fellowship during his stay in London.

Sadighi’s work is founded in documentary photography. He develops his ideas through the phenomena of his surroundings caused by socio-political and cultural issues. The experiences that have the most powerful effects on Iranian lifestyle and relationships,  particularly in urban environments. These changes in phenomena and self, play an integral role in reflecting his personal interpretation of life and living.

The Reminder is an attempt towards an-other look at the Facebook profile pictures of Iran’s youth. Through a reconstruction of the portraits their authorship is lost in the midst of their innumerability. These pictures, usually taken as snapshots, seem to conceal the represented person as well as all of the elements that characterise them. Does such loss of the authorship and privation of representation occur because of the countlessness of the photographs, or is it because their viewers are skimming through them so quickly? Is it caused by a desire in making and/or representing a different sort of being in a matter of seconds? Or, it is such way of doing, a remembrance of an existence that shares the untold and the hidden in a corner of time?

Traversals.  Anna-Sophie Springer / K.Verlag Press

TRAVERSALS is based on a series of conceptual interviews with Dora Garcia, Chris Kraus, Mark von Schlegell, Charles Stankievech, and Jacob Wren originally produced for an installation in an art gallery. As a re-issue of these texts the forthcoming publication continues K.’s interest in the book-as-exhibition. Each invited contributor has found a unique way to explore the hybrid spaces between genres and art forms, and the discussions focus especially on the role and relationship between visual art and writing. While the interview process was rather formalised––with one set of five identical questions posed to each person in the first round, and then five individual questions asked in a second round in response to the first five answers––the texts themselves delight through a personal tone and a great openness for both idiosyncratic trajectories and unexpected trasversals between the five different chapters.

The material was originally produced for the piece TRAVERSALS (With Ladder) shown in the exhibition 5x5Castelló2011 at Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castelló, Castelló, Spain (8 July – 18 September 2011).

On the occasion of 5×5 the interviews were pinned to the wall in a grid while a sliding library ladder allowed for a playfully embodied reading experience. The spatialised format revealed the parallels in the conversations as well as their differences – particularly as the conversations evolve.

Mirrors And Others. A. Schulze. Spector Books.

In 2011, Andreas Schulze lived in Paris thanks to a research grant. At some point, he visited the Louvre, let himself be swept up by the stream of tourists, looked at pictures, met an old friend and started to photograph his series “Louvre”. A reflection on the nature of image production in front of images, whose significance is granted by virtue of the famous exhibition location. In “Text” he writes about the feeling of stumbling around between images of torture, tenderness and all the humorous pic- tures in between. In the chapter “Image” he takes over the stage direction: He de-contextualizes media images in order to pair them in new groups of two. He develops his own grammar promoting patterns and forms from one page to the next. A visual narrative flow emerges with unexpected turns that reformulates the question of the origin of images.

Andreas Schulze hielt sich 2011 mit einem Stipendium in Paris auf. Irgendwann besuchte er den Louvre, ließ sich vom Strom der Touristen mitreißen, schaute sich Bilder an, traf einen alten Freund und begann seine Serie „Louvre“ zu fotografieren. Eine Reflexion zum Bildermachen vor Bildern, deren Bedeutung durch den berühmten Ausstellungsort verbürgt ist. In „Text“ schreibt er, wie es sich anfühlt, zwischen Folterbildern, Zärtlichkeitsbildern und all den dazwischenliegenden Witzbildern herumzustolpern. Im Kapitel „Image“ übernimmt er die Regie: Er dekontextualisiert Medienbilder, um sie zu Bildpaaren zu sortieren. Er entwickelt eine eigene Grammatik, die Muster und Formen von einer Seite zur nächsten vorantreibt. Es entsteht ein visueller Erzählfluss mit unerwarteten Wendungen, der die Frage nach der Herkunft der Bilder neu stellt.
