Sound Installation

Max Neuhaus began his career as a musician, a percus-sionist. He continues to use sound as his medium. Why. then, do we find his works in the world of art, in places dedicated to seeing, not to listening? Why, in other words, does so much of his work appear on sites, indoors and out, where we would expect to find painting and sculpture? I think answers to these general questions about Neuhaus entire oeuvre must precede the attempt to say anything in particular about specific pieces. We must account for what appears to be an immense, overarching anomaly before taking up the puzzles presented in turn by each of Neuhaus various works.

Book Launch with Stefan Sulzer: The day my mother touched Robert Ryman

The artist book The day my mother touched Robert Ryman by Stefan Sulzer tells the story of a visit to the Dia Art Foundation in Beacon, New York, during which the mother of the artist felt so irritated by the elegant simplicity of Ryman’s paintings that she slowly let her hand slide over one of the paintings. Stefan Sulzer combines this story with statements and information about the work of Ryman and thereby creates a selective and poetic narration about the reception of art.

The reading, which comes on the 40th anniversary of Ryman’s first institutional solo in Switzerland—at Kunsthalle Basel, of course!—is followed by a talk in German with the curator Samuel Leuenberger (SALTS, Birsfelden).

The first 17 copies of The day my mother touched Robert Ryman were published as a special edition by Edition Taube, numbered, signed, and touched by the mother. Stefan Sulzer’s exhibition of the same title at Galerie Bernhard has just been extended until July 25.

Theatre Of Hunters. Pedro Barateiro. Kunsthalle Basel.

Theatre Of Hunters. Pedro Barateiro.

In Theatre of Hunters, his first major solo exhibition outside of Portugal, Pedro Barateiro presents a sequence of installations that include “staged” sculptures, found objects, photographs, drawings, paintings and films that encompass the five connected galleries on the ground floor of the Kunsthalle Basel.

Barateiro’s multifarious practice can be situated within a contemporary mode of post-studio production that is neither bound to one medium nor limited to any particular type of skilled object-making. Instead, the Lisbon-based artist primarily works with existing popular images, documents, literary texts, found objects and artworks gleaned from a diverse range of contexts. Barateiro’s practice is driven by a critical “re-reading” of those cultural and historical texts that play a major role in determining our perception of reality. Rather than mirroring or otherwise directly responding to lived experience, Barateiro relays highly coded and fragmented statements, mediated by complex visual signs that possess the quality of things remembered from dreams, while simultaneously relating to specific referents.
