In the pedestrian zone I only entered the closed Sinn Le er department store for a short time. Stagnant moving stairways, empty product displays, old brand banners, sockets without use. Architecture and objects stick out. Best of the rest. Everything left over became fetishized, standing for something else. Outside I strolled around the building. All signs and logos were altered, now meaning literally empty sense. All shop windows were decorated with left over stuff, someone seemed to still feel responsible. In a close by drugstore I bought two single-use cameras, came back and took these pictures.

Terremoto 7: Eternal Life

A move towards secularization–the minimization of the presence of religion in public life, has been driven by many modernizing governments and regimes during the 20th century. For many, religion remains the main explanation of worldly phenomena and institutional and familial logic, and its influence is usually persistent in the most intimate behaviors. However, lately religion has been portrayed in Western media as a source of violence and intolerance— forgoing its conciliatory role.

What is known as the “ontological turn” in contemporary anthropology is part of a pursuit to deconstruct the metaphysics and relativism underlying the very questions asked by the humanities about knowledge production and spirituality. Current work in social sciences, technology studies, science and the arts have continued to reshape the idea of spirituality by troubling Western canons, establishing a dialogue with manifold cosmologies to better understand the ways we can relate to the non human and the inhuman.

In Eternal Life, Terremoto seeks to explore accounts linked to the mystical, the spiritual, the carnal, and the incarnate in relation to the arts, but also within a broader cultural spectrum. Through such examination we move to reconcile desire with the awareness of sharing this earth and perhaps, the entire unbound universe, with other life forms and entities.

Idea Car. Matthew Clifford Green. 2nd Cannons Publications & Motto Books

Matthew Clifford Green is a young painter based in Los Angeles.

On his canvasses Matthew Clifford Green expends the material of oil paint in a near-facetious way, creating works that border the monstrous with the cartoonish. As the surface of his works mound and extend off the canvas, the act of viewership becomes tactile despite its distance, blending sight with touch. The crudeness of Green’s painting style results in works that bend the formal nature of color and the oil medium towards the realm of hyper simplicity, while carefully dodging the fine line of affected naivety.

He has already held plenty solo exhibitions.

IDEA CAR is the artist’s first book of scribbled poetry.

In the mid-1970s, Harun Farocki wrote a two-page call programmatically entitled What Ought to Be Done, followed by a survey addressed to potential collaborators and supporters. He envisioned an institution to “organize a coalition of working people, not from an abstract understanding but from the contact points of their work.” The purpose of this institution, devoted to documentary practices, was twofold. It was “intended to collect, i.e. secure what is there,” but also “to produce, i.e. initiate what is not yet there.” In doing so, it was meant to facilitate social and collaborative processes, comprehensive and interdisciplinary studies without time pressure.

At the occasion of Farocki’s working paper, the Harun Farocki Institut, founded in 2015, historically situates Farocki’s initiative and reflects upon the proximities and differences between creating an institution in 1976 and forty years later.

The publication includes Farocki’s text, a commentary by Tom Holert, Doreen Mende and Volker Pantenburg, as well as a letter written in 1975 by documentary filmmaker Peter Nestler in response to Farocki’s circular.

Sudan, the only remaining male northern white rhinoceros.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya.
This project documents Sudan, the last white rhinoceros of North Africa. Sudan lived his life inside the Prague zoo, before being transferred to Kenya for reproduction and specie preservation. Sudan lives under armed protection. Giovanna Silva spent ten days in his wildlife preserve, following him from a close distance. The book, entitled Good Boy – the way the guards call the rhinoceros, this lullaby which endlessly accompanied Giovanna’s days with the rhino – 0372, his breeding number, is a tribute to this prehistoric and unique animal. The book is conceived as a sequence of abstract images, in which the animal is barely recognizable, and close-up of his skin and his body progressively fading away.

The glare that a shadow can emit is evident in recent Latin American history, a history notoriously scored by oppression, violence, disappearances, and other painful secrets tossed into the gray areas of memory and to the margins of hegemonic historical accounts. In the shadow, you’re protected by the invisibility of marginalization—at the same time you’re made vulnerable by a lack of guarantees brought about through the neglect of the dominant power. The shadows that move through us are the constant reminder of what never changes: long-standing oppression and discrimination, perpetuated all around us in a political climate of abuse and tough luck. As we name them, draw their contours and seek to resolve their enigmas, we ask ourselves to what real end do we use artistic thought to gain awareness of those shadows? Can something change? Or are those ideas mere shadow play?
