F.R. DAVID – The “Iditorial” issue
Dieter Roelstraete
“The bizarre order in which the seven days of the week appear in the current issue of F.R.DAVID is modelled after the sequence of KarlHeinz Stockhausen’s opera cycle ‘Licht’, starting with “Donnerstag am Licht” (work on which began in 1977) and ending with “Sonntag am Licht”, the part with which the composer finally concluded the series in 2003. In Stockhausen’s cycle, the subject matter of each opera mirrors (however opaquely at times) the traditional mythological attributes ascribed to the various days of the week—not a concern that exerted any influence on F.R.DAVID’s appropriation of this structure, which is no more than a homage in passing. Each editorial was conceived and written, however, within the space of a day, with various elements recurring, echo-like, throughout the week that was. So far, ‘Licht’ has never been staged in its entirety, and it is not known whether Stockhausen ever meant it to be.”

Olaf Nicolai and Jan Wenzel in conversation
Relational authorship, or: What is “independent publishing”?
“Independent publishing” is currently a popular denomination: The Berlin Art Library has been exhibiting Christoph Keller’s “Kiosk-Archiv” with over 6.000 publications by independent publishers now for several months. A range of European metropolises hosted art book festivals this year, as many as never before. In the field of art, publishing on one’s own is currently on the upswing — however the precise meaning of “independent publishing” usually remains vague.
Markus Dreßen and Jan Wenzel, co-founders of the Leipzig publishing company Spector Books have been working together with the artist Olaf Nicolai for nearly ten years. These shared production experiences serve as the starting point for a discussion of the term “independent publishing”: What happens when artists and designers enter into a relationship in the production of a book that breaches the traditional behaviour patterns of genuine artistic creation on the one hand and the provision of design service on the other hand? How does such a practise alter the notion of authorship? And does a different form of book production also lead to different, new stylistics?
sub-tle. is a sound project by Satoshi Okamoto, who has been participating in ‘la! Düsseldorf / japandorf’, a project led by Klaus Dinger (ex- Kraftwerk, Neu!, la! Düsseldorf), from 2002.
They have performed the improvisational live in Germany, Belgium and Spain and have been very well received by the audiences in European countries too.
The artwork of the album sleeve is done by our favorite Japanese artist HIMAA – who will be presenting his new zine at the coming 2. Zürcher Zine Sezession event on the 13th.
