White Zinfandel #5: Shame. Jiminie Ha (Ed.). W/—— Projects.

A biannual publication by W/—— Projects (“With Projects”), White Zinfandel is devoted to the visual manifestation of food and culture produced within the lives of creative individuals. Interested in the intersections between the various creative fields, White Zinfandel is a continuation of this curatorial experiment, coupling food and art as a reliable means to provoke unexpected reactions, cravings and curiositites.
Each issue is dedicated to a food ‘theme’ and is launched with a curated dinner concepted by a chef who also reacts to the issue’s theme. The dinner itself is an opportunity to create a more immersive artistic experience for the invited community of fine artists, writers, architects, curators and designers.
White Zinfandel is not only a limited edition publication that is carefully curated every issue. It also houses services that include branding, marketing, and design consultation. We also concept innovative collaborative projects with other institutions, organizations and brands.

An Invocation. Mike Nelson. Focal Point Gallery.

Using a selection of books chosen from the former Southend Central Library’s withdrawn stock, Nelson has created a permanent installation, concealed within the internal cavity walls of the new gallery. As the only visible record of the hidden artwork, this artist’s publication documents the covers of the five hundred and thirty books, which have been methodically documented and reproduced over 1,000 pages. This limited edition artist’s book (with PVC jacket) contains an interview between Director of Focal Point Gallery, Andrew Hunt and the artist Mike Nelson.

Villa, How to Use

With essays by Maria Berman, Nuria Enguita Mayo, Ricardo Nicolau, Dieter Roelstraete, Doris von Drathen English Designed by Purtill Family Business 207 × 254 mm, 128 pages, 55 color and 8 b/w, illustrations, softcover
The first monograph to be published on the work of Leonor Antunes, villa, how to use is released in association with the exhibition Antunes conceived for the Serralves Villa in 2011. The result of a close collaboration between the artist and graphic designer Conny Purtill, this fully-illustrated publication includes installation views of Antunes’ exhibition (which featured works produced by the artist over the past decade alongside pieces specifically created for the Villa spaces), as well as five essays that offer an in-depth survey on Antunes’ art.

Dieter Roelstraete highlights the speculative concerns that, under the blanket term architecture, Antunes shares with the three most important German-speaking philosophers of the twentieth century (Wittgenstein, Heidegger, and Adorno): identity and belonging, homeliness and uprootedness, measures and proportion, space and balance. Taking the case study of Manhattan’s Park Avenue after WWII, Maria Berman examines the theme of duplication in architecture. Doris van Drathen finds in Leonor Antunes’ work the use of “measurement” as a tool of grasping the world. Nuria Enguita Mayo addresses the problems of duplication, faktura and restriction, while Ricardo Nicolau reflects on the dialogue of the artist with the architecture of the Serralves Villa and the memory of other buildings from the history of modernism.

Human – Space – Machine. Stage experiments at the Bauhaus

In 1921, Walter Gropius founded a theater workshop at the Bauhaus. It conducted new research and experiments on the relationship between humans and technology. The central protagonists Lothar Schreyer, Oskar Schlemmer, and László Moholoy-Nagy investigated the issues of mechanization, machine industrialization, and rationalization. They sought a new, meaningful relationship with the dynamized, increasingly technically animated environment. In their stage laboratory, they developed abstract motion studies, designed atmosphere machines, and built theater apparatus. They also organized the famous Bauhaus celebrations, where they staged themselves as a collective of “new humans”. For the first time, an exhibition and a catalog with sketches, drawings, photographs as well as films, figurines, costumes, models, and apparatus are now devoted to the experiments and concepts of the legendary Bauhaus stage.

The Body Decides

A pop up book for adults, this catalogue on the work of Franz Erhard Walther sought its inspiration in the artist’s work in order to determine the publication-form that might most appropriately convey the centrality of action to the artist’s oeuvre. The performativity at the heart of Walther’s more than a half century long practice is underscored through the appearance of six brightly coloured elementary pop up forms spread throughout the book.
