This special issue, guest edited by writer, curator and sound artist Frédéric Acquaviva, is the very first comprehensive publication on Lettrist magazines. It describes, shows and contextualizes all issues of all 119 magazines created between 1946 and 2016 in, or in connection to, Lettrism – this vibrant and dynamic French avant-garde movement whose publishing adventures and efforts have, until OEI #92–93, been far too little known.

Trance has been the flagship for electronic music across the globe during the nineties and early zeroes. The sound’s trademark optimistic and euphoric aspects has brought some of the most compelling musical pieces of its time, and undoubtedly had a significant influence on future electronic music to come. Yet, its historical significance has been highly overlooked.

Hypnotised is the first encyclopedia to cover the global trance movement during its most prolific years. The 322-page book spans a near-complete discography of supposedly essential albums, labels and releases, alongside exclusive photos and in-depth interviews with influential artists and label owners.

The artist Rita McBride was Director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 2013 to 2017. During this time she gave ten groundbreaking speeches connecting contemporary artistic production with art education, processing the classic lecture format with passion and humor. Manifestos and performative elements found their way into the speeches, illuminating the artistic and educational aims of these public events. Speech! brings these lectures together for the first time. This book is a guide for artistic activity, a critical reaction on the present, and an invitation to look at our society from new perspectives.

To write, to boil, to cook ideas, stir them all, spice them up with some references and again write and knead the dough out of it. To what forms can recipes lead? This is the central question of this thesis. Recipes follow a certain literary genre. Whether carved on stones or written along the horizontal edges of a notebook, they all conform to a specific structure. In the text I analyse these structures, to show the way in which the recipe itself unveils its deeper meanings, concerns, and secrets. Why, when, who and how are fundamental questions I ask, while I read out loud a recipe about macaroni from the 1495 – or when I look at a Sumerian tablet where a Cuneiform system of writing states that epilepsy is a tease of the demons. Material form, literary form and social interaction are the flavors I want to bring up from each recipe I use as an example, hoping to find a way to understand how these three elements are melted together to form an interconnected circle.

Locomotion is a one-off travel zine with contributions from art-related actors, engaging with modes and troubles of travel. Featuring contributions by Samar al Summary, Fully Funded Residencies, Burak Taşdizen, Azar Pajuhandeh, Ipek Burçak, Ada Karayel and Eren Ileri. It is a wandering around (im)mobilities of non-humans, artist residencies as a way of survival, road and driving memories, heatwaves and meltings, and commercial space travel.

Locomotion is designed by Ada Karayel, and co-faciliated by Eren Ileri. Illustrations are made by Goodnewsforbadguys.

The magazine comes with a sticker set; a fly and the Locomotion logo.

From Editor’s and Publisher’s Note:

“…When things started to resemble sci-fi dystopia, the absurdity of writing applications for artist residencies at that time has triggered us to have a look at the issue of traveling more deeply and we found ourselves digging up different holes that leave threads for you to connect…”

“…Before we came to the idea of making a magazine, we were speculating on various issues entangled with travel: the materiality of roads, and their related social meanings, debates that can be categorized as anti-travel or travel skepticism and slowing down, inactivity or motionlessness, and also the luxury of not-to-travel by choice…”

“…Since this publication took its start with the pandemic, attentiveness towards some of the matter that are partly in our bodies, and to others that are not, brought us to the word locomotion, which means not just the motion of the human and the living but also of the non-living and the non-human, of which you will find pieces scattered all over the magazine.”

The book includes the first publication of Gidal’s text from 1978, with a new introduction. Gidal in this dense theoretical essay deals with the limits of language and representation in the practice of experimental filmmaking and writing. Considered as one of the most influential experimental filmmakers, Gidal’s lost text “The Author as Producer of Nothing”, will give a new insight into the theoretical and political context to the artistic film practices. Afterword by Sezgin Boynik. Design by Ott Kagovere.

I See / You Mean is an experimental novel about mirrors, maps, relationships, the ocean, elusive success, and possible happiness. Through a collage of verbal photographs, overheard dialogue, sexual encounters, found material, and self identification devices (astrology, the I Ching, palmistry, Tarot), it charts from past to future the changing currents between two women and two men: a writer, a model/stockbroker/maybe dictator, a photographer, and an actor. A lot happens between the lines. Art critic Lucy Lippard wrote this novel in 1970 and became a feminist in the process: “I started writing and realized I was ashamed to be a woman. Then I had to find out why. Then I got very angry. The fragmented visual form came out of contemporary art and the conflicting emotions of 1960s political confrontation; they suggested a new way to put things back together—an open-ended, female way that didn’t pretend conclusions.”

Lucy R. Lippard is a writer, activist, and curator. She is the author of twenty-five books on contemporary art and cultural criticism and has curated some fifty exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and Latin America.

Matt Brand’s second book could not be more of a departure from his first. To embrace the value of incompletion and observing works in progress, the author has published his “Free Writing” note from the Notes app on his phone, where he would capture lines and fragments whenever they came to him between the dates of 9/4/18 and 12/08/20. Some entries are only 2 or 3 words, whereas others are entire poems and paragraphs of thought.

Most published books can only provide a reader with an obscured vantage of the text’s origin, after having taken it through countless rounds of edits and revisions prior to release. Notes App aims to eliminate these confounding factors and hauntological smudges by instead showcasing creative writing ideas and fragments in their original state. The book offers readers the linguistic equivalent of a fine artist’s sketchbook or a recording artist’s draft folder. Here entries may be just as likely to stimulate inspiration as they are to spur reflection on the nature and lifespan of creative ideas.

RAW Académie was developed in Dakar to create a space of experimental teaching and collaboration, of deconstruction and exposure, of knowledge and nourishment. Koyo Kouoh, founder of RAW Material Company, wished for curatorial inquiry and critical writing to join artistic thinking at this site of international encounters. During these two-month long sessions that take place twice a year, young artists and curators—the Académie fellows—come from all over the world to be accompanied by faculty members with whom they exchange and experiment around particular discursive practices or thematic foci. The commitment to create a community that did not previously exist has led to an ever expanding RAW Académie family of Pan-African and global orientation. This thriving and stimulating meeting ground of pedagogy and art has cultivated the emergence of many provocations, reflections and new possibilities, some of which are shared in Breathing Out of School—a volume of diverse texts that slowly constructs an invitation to ruminate upon what it means to share the table of curiosity and creativity with others, as well as think about what feeds our own earnest dreams.
