Carlos Bunga

This publication documents the special commission made for the Sonae/Serralves Project in 2012 for which the artist created a very large structure for the entrance hall of the Serralves Museum emphasizing the space’s verticality and functionality, in dialogue with Álvaro Siza’s architecture. Richly illustrated with Bunga’s projects in other artistic contexts ― Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (São Paulo, Brazil), Hammer Museum (Los Angeles, EUA), 29th São Paulo Biennial, Miami Art Museum (Miami, EUA), Krome Gallery (Berlin, Germany), Center for Curatorial Studies (New York, USA), Manifesta 5 (San Sebastián, Spain), among others ― the book features texts by João Fernandes and Ricardo Nicolau (exhibition curators), Adam Budak (curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.), Marta Jecu (writer and researcher at CICANT Institute, Universidade Lusófona, Lisbon) and an interview conducted by María Inez Rodríguez (former chief curator at Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City) offering comprehensive insights into Carlos Bunga’s work.

During the Exhibition, the Studio Will Be Close. Lorenzo Benedetti & Caroline Dumalin (Eds.). Wiels / Motto Books.

During the Exhibition, the Studio Will Be Close is published on the occasion of the eponymous group exhibition organised by WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels (14 June – 17 August 2014) in collaboration with Motto Books.

The trilingual exhibition publication is composed of nine chapters in one volume. The introductory chapter features an essay by curator Lorenzo Benedetti, whose point of departure is the fine line and particular interaction between production and presentation at the art centre. What lies in between the physical proximity of the working studios and exhibition spaces turns out to be more than just a symbolic separation. Eight former artists-in-residence at WIELS were invited to design their own book space that consists of each 16 pages, in relation to their contributions to the dialogue of the show.

Contributors: Lorenzo Benedetti, Melissa Gordon, Lina Viste Grønli, Rob Johannesma, Aukje Koks, G. Küng, Cathérine Lommée, Emmanuelle Quertain, Grace Schwindt

New Public School in Jerusalem – Under the Mountain 2011-2013. Omer Krieger. Public School Editions.

New Public Art in Jerusalem documents selected moments and actions that took place during the Under the Mountain Festival from 2011-2013, with Omer Krieger as artistic director.

The book, which was published by the Jerusalem Season of Culture in collaboration with the graphic design studio Public School, was edited by Tea Tupajić, a Croatian theatre director who specializes in critical thinking on performance, institutions and politics. She also edits the Frakcija magazine and participated in Under the Mountain 2013.

The Under the Mountain festival which kicks off again, for the fourth time in July, commissions and hosts artistic works “made of people,” and spans a range of artistic disciplines including: performance art, theatre, dance, video, fine arts, music, sculpture and discourse. Under the Mountain is a popular, expansive and in-depth project which plays out, entirely, in Jerusalem’s public domain—the center of Israel’s political and religious life.

An artist with six legs, 253 works, 20 years, 8 curators, 1 exhibition is the catalogue of the exhibition «Working Title: “A Retrospective Curated by XXXXXXXXX”» held at Kunsthal Charlottenborg from 13 December 2013 to the 2nd of February 2014.

Describing their projects and works as tools, to be activated and often even changed, by the viewers, the users, XXXXXXXXX’ versatile artistic practice is distinguished by a continued interest in exploring social, political and cultural conditions. XXXXXXXXX makes up their own rules, humorously and intelligently challenging conventions about things like copyright, power structures, design and economy. Throughout their career a distinguishing trait of their modus operandi has been to collaborate with other artists and experts.

Columnist. Boris Rebetez.

Texts by Boris Buden, Keti Chukhrov, Vit Havránek, Marco Scotini and Joanna Warsza.

Published for “Il Piedistallo Vuoto – Fantasmi dall’Est Europa / The Empty Pedestal – Ghosts from Eastern Europe” – presented at the Museo Civico Archeologico in Bologna from January 24 to March 16 and organized by Arte Fiera – this book accompanies a project that traces recent developments in the art scene of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. On view are a hundred works (from leading Italian private art collections) by over forty artists, ranging from members of the younger generation, such as Petrit Halilaj, Gintaras Didžiapetris and Evgeny Antufiev, to recognized masters like Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Marina Abramović, and Miroslav Tichý. “None of these so-called archeologists”, writes exhibition curator Marco Scotini, “is practicing an art of ruins: they all act upon time but also ‘against’ time, in favor of a time to come. Neither do they aim to predict anything. All they do is allow the unknown knocking on the door to enter”. Alongside a compendium of images, the book presents a selection of essays by philosophers, art critics and curators that illustrate and comment on certain key concepts examined in the show, including the notions of “East” and “West”, and of “democracy”, “struggle”, “History”, and “site-specificity”.
