Sur / Mario Garcia Torres and Rodrigo Ortiz Monasterio @ Motto Berlin
from 7pm

On the ocasion of the Berlin Bienniale, a conversation between Mario Garcia Torres and Rodrigo Ortiz Monasterio on the work of Conlon Nancarrow and the publication Sur: Issue #1 Studies for Player Piano.

Sur is a contemporary art magazine published out of Mexico City annually. Both a publication and a series of invitations, Sur is premised on an aesthetics of encounter, specifically between the writing, art, and ideas expressed in Mexican culture in relation to discourses, philosophies, and art generated elsewhere. Published in both Spanish and English, Sur creates a new and necessary space for engaging and amplifying such discussions.

Issue #1 departs from the concept of a player piano and specifically addresses certain fragments of the life and work of experimental composer Conlon Nancarrow (1912-1997). Although an American, Nancarrow exiled himself to Mexico, where he could openly belong to the Communist party with social and political impunity. There, he became famous for a series of scores, entitled Studies for Player Piano (1948-1960 and 1965-1992), making him one of the first composers to write scores for machines to play. Although he lived in relative isolation in Mexico, he did become a Mexican citizen in 1955 and enjoyed a close collaboration with the Mexican modern architect and muralist Juan O’Gorman with whom he worked to build his house in Mexico City.

Sur is published by Bom Dia Boa Tarde Boa Noite.

An Invocation. Mike Nelson. Focal Point Gallery.

Using a selection of books chosen from the former Southend Central Library’s withdrawn stock, Nelson has created a permanent installation, concealed within the internal cavity walls of the new gallery. As the only visible record of the hidden artwork, this artist’s publication documents the covers of the five hundred and thirty books, which have been methodically documented and reproduced over 1,000 pages. This limited edition artist’s book (with PVC jacket) contains an interview between Director of Focal Point Gallery, Andrew Hunt and the artist Mike Nelson.

I’m In Business! D. Dowbekin & L. Liccini (Eds.). Doppell.

A banter of words, a book of jokes, a collection of puns—this publication celebrates and compiles 66 fine examples of the traditional English to and fro phrase game: I’m in business.

The witty play of idioms and connotations, valued by many for it’s somewhat childish approach and humorous take on various professions, has finally been put to paper for the first time.

New Public School in Jerusalem – Under the Mountain 2011-2013. Omer Krieger. Public School Editions.

New Public Art in Jerusalem documents selected moments and actions that took place during the Under the Mountain Festival from 2011-2013, with Omer Krieger as artistic director.

The book, which was published by the Jerusalem Season of Culture in collaboration with the graphic design studio Public School, was edited by Tea Tupajić, a Croatian theatre director who specializes in critical thinking on performance, institutions and politics. She also edits the Frakcija magazine and participated in Under the Mountain 2013.

The Under the Mountain festival which kicks off again, for the fourth time in July, commissions and hosts artistic works “made of people,” and spans a range of artistic disciplines including: performance art, theatre, dance, video, fine arts, music, sculpture and discourse. Under the Mountain is a popular, expansive and in-depth project which plays out, entirely, in Jerusalem’s public domain—the center of Israel’s political and religious life.

I can not repeat what I hear

Natalie Czech’s works meander between concrete poetry and conceptual photography. In der newest publication she directs her main focus to the writing process and its inherent possibilities. For the series “Voyelles”— which refers to Rimbaud’s eponymous poem — Czech invited ten authors to describe a fictitious synesthesia-invoking photography in her name. In the publication’s other series, “Poems by Repetition”, the stylistic device of repetition simultaneously creates echo, music, rhythm, stuttering, and beat. Natalie Czech uses newspaper articles, record covers, books, different iPad models and Kindle readers as supporting media for the poems and thus creates a dialogue between printed text and illustration, the literary form of a poem and the artistic practice of photography. The artist transforms literary into visual strategies and formally writes poems in the medium of photography.
