Ostalgia. Simona Rota. Fabulatorio.

Ost [‘ᴐst], German, noun: East
Algos [álgos], Ancient greek, noun: pain

Ostalgia is a photographic series developed for over 2 years. It was born in the wake of a documentation work for the Museum of Architecture in Vienna. I was a photographer in a research team set up by the Museum whose mission was to locate and study the official Soviet architecture promoted in its 15 satellite republics between 1960 and 1990. The series is a subjective catalogue of monumental buildings that testify to a past of heroic intentions, but which reach the present completely eroded with disappointment. They were icons of success and progress and, therefore, complicit in political propaganda and the dynamics of legitimization of a totalitarian ideology. Houses of Culture of the Trade Unions, Houses of Culture of the Socialist Pioneers, Congress Centers of the Workers, Lenin Palaces, Circuses and Sports Palaces, Museums, Memorials and Mausoleums…

58IC. Thobias Faldt. Own Books.

Book for volume 2 & 3 in the project 581C together with photographer Thobias Fäldt. The book has no defined beginning or end. Instead of the typical linear structure, the book aims to give the reader a feeling of a circular structure. All images in the book are therefore printed twice but appear in different surroundings. The only text on the actual book is printed on the books sides and is in itself a loop, to strengthen the circular concept. The packaging is printed with a pattern made out of the typographies four different building blocks.

With no horizon, one’s view into the distance is impeded. Scanning, searching, one’s gaze comes to a standstill in Leon Kirchlechner’s photographs. The eye may slow, but it doesn’t find repose. The peace is not contemplative: it is restless. The restricted field of view has a narrowing effect. It makes the room strangely dislocated, denies me the geographical coordinates that would give me a feeling of safety. And so, even as the onlooker, I remain dislocated in the usually centrically, often symmetrically composed images. I can’t make sense of this centrality. Nor is it reassuring. Although it gives me pause, it doesn’t offer anything for me to grasp. It’s not the enjoyable, thought-provoking stillness that many works of art inspire. Rather, it’s an oppressive, constricting stillness, one that causes alarm.

2 Steps aside. Stijn Cole.Art Paper Editions.

Together with the landscape-architect Stefan Vidts, Stijn Cole went on a journey from the flat isle of Texel (NL) to the ancient woods of Bialowieza (Pl). Two extremes in the European landscape. The book “2 steps aside” tells the story of that trip and shows 6 pencil-drawings. As the base for these drawings, Cole took a picture at Branitz, a landscape-park in the geographical and conceptual middle of the traject, moved two steps aside and took a second picture of the same subject. The book has a “Concertina” format so the original movement of 180cm is kept.

With text contributions by Patrick Ronse and Stefan Vidts.
