Text by Angelo Del Boca and Giovanna Silva

The book Libya: Inch by Inch, House by House, Alley by Alley is part of a series of publications about nations at war, or in crisis; conceived by Giovanna Silva, they tell the stories of different countries through photographs of their multifaceted landscapes. In the case of Libya, Silva has attempted to outline the architectural structures built by Muammar al-Gaddafi’s regime that were demolished during the recent revolution. Her journey started from Benghazi—the first epicenter of the revolt, as a city that had always been hostile to Colonel Gaddafi—and culminated in Tripoli, inside the bunker-barrack of Gaddafi’s residence. In this construction and de-construction of Gaddafi’s personality, Silva creates a parallel narrative relying on archival pictures she has collected over the years, depicting everything from a young Gaddafi surrounded by the politicians he did business with for years (who would later turn their backs on him), to images of his death, when he lay bleeding and knocked to the ground just like the architecture that embodied his ideals. The publication includes a conversation between Giovanna Silva and Gaddafi biographer Angelo Del Boca, who knew, inside out, just who the real Gaddafi was.

Dhondt’s method of working is intensive and comprises various stages of documentation. Via Google Maps she marks places where she leaves her sculptures in public spaces. The locations of both her creations and her photography can be traced through the coordinates via internet and physical maps. Her consistent and methodical way of working, along with the creative process that takes place exclusively in the outdoor space as well as the documenting of that process is firmly rooted in movements such as Land Art and conceptual art of the 1960s and 70s. Dhondt’s work is a kind of monument to temporariness. The constructions are based on the dimensions of personal space. These spatial demarcations and primary sculptures become altered into nomadic symbols, so to speak, and function as poetic podia for resistance. Dhondt is resisting the current financial and, above all, moral crisis with a call for humaneness and a search for meaning.

Lara Dhondt (Turnhout, 1979) lives in Antwerp and works with the urban landscape. She makes use of various media in her work, such as photography, installation, video, typography and performance.

For several years, Paul Kooiker and Erik Kessels have organized evenings for friends in which they share the strangest photo books in their collections. The books shown are rarely available in regular shops, but are picked up in thrift stores and from antiquaries. The group’s fascination for these pictorial non-fiction books comes from the need to find images that exist on the fringe of regular commercial photo books. It’s only in this area that it’s possible to find images with an uncontrived quality. This constant tension makes the books interesting. It’s also worth noting that these tomes all fall within certain categories: the medical, instructional, scientific, sex, humour or propaganda. Paul Kooiker and Erik Kessels have made a selection of their finest books from within this questionable new genre. Incredibly small photobooks is the second volume (after Terribly awesome photobooks) showing this amazing collection.

Celluloid Pathways Into the Land of Dreams. Björn Engberg. Moon Space Books.

A photographic novel by Björn Engberg about a trip across the Atlantic, through North America and into the subconscious.

Run far away, from the thrill
Over the hill, leave the chill
Coyotes roar “Hello-hello!”
And all you see is mellow-yellow
You find the sand, find the sun
Find the cave, where it begun

Here the poison tastes so good
With orange drops from the hood
Your mind must turn all so strange
Must get lost, out of range
Magic tricks can’t save you now
It all twirls up, you hear Ka-pow!

Phenotype. Jochen Lempert. Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König

Since the early 1990s, the German photographer and biologist Jochen Lempert (born 1958) has used analogue, black-and-white photography to convey his gently reverential vision of nature and sentience–whether that of animals, plants or humans. Often grainy, sometimes verging on abstraction, and sometimes focusing minutely on the activity of some tiny creature, his photographs exude a simple pleasure in fleeting tranquility. Lempert has also taken a quietly particular stance on the presentation of his work: in exhibitions, his images are presented unframed and tacked up on walls, and his books (among them Recent Field Work and Coevolution) are always immediately identifiable for their modest but exquisite design, printing and paper. Continuing this tradition of gorgeous bookmaking, Jochen Lembert: Phenotype reproduces 450 of his works, most of them arranged in groups and sequences, from more than 20 years of artistic production.
