Remco Torenbosch book promotion european bleu

Bookpresentation with a talk between Remco Torenbosch (artist) and Patricia Reed (artist and writer)
June 14, 2014
from 7pm

This publication is the result of an extensive period of research into the history of the European Flag, opening up intriguing discussion on the changing socio-economics of EU nations, the disappearance of once booming textile industries and the strong individual identities of a union in flux.

This publication profiles the documents, design proposals and written correspondence between Heitz, Lévy, and further collaborators they would form the painstakingly diplomatic development of an iconic vexillological moment.

As part of the book’s research, a collection of fabric monochromes woven by weavers from all 28 member states of the EU in th base colour of the flag was compiled. These collated monochromes as such become a map themselves of the socio-economic shift within EU member communities, an embodiment of the disappearing textile industries of Europe.

Cookie

Friday, June 6th, from 7pm @ Motto Berlin
Please join us in Berlin to celebrate the publication of Jan Verwoert’s COOKIE!

Edited by Vivian Sky Rehberg and Marnie Slater

Co-published by Sternberg Press and the Piet Zwart Institute, Willem de Kooning Academy

Design by Nienke Terpsma

This new volume brings together a selection of Jan Verwoert’s most recent writings. COOKIE! is a sequel to Verwoert’s Tell Me What You Want, What You Really, Really Want (edited by Vanessa Ohlraun, 2010), and third in a series of books published with the Piet Zwart Institute.

If we don’t merely reduce art to clever code play in the arenas of representation, how do we speak about what is at stake? In response to this question, Verwoert addresses the forces at the heart of the tragicomedy that making, showing, and critiquing art implicates us in. He honors the basic joys of turning one thing into another, and the miracles of rhythm and rhyme that characterize the residual level of mimetic magic in art. In this key, the unverifiable is practiced daily: bodies are remade, feelings transfigured. As Alina Szapocznikow wrote, the mouth chews and out comes sculpture. Verwoert’s COOKIE! renders visible the endless emotional labor of setting the stage (for others), poses the thorny question of whether there could ever be a labor union for con-artists (like us), and gestures toward an ethics of disappointment to battle false expectations and as a way to come to terms with the fact that, no matter how you look at it, criticism hurts.

Sur / Mario Garcia Torres and Rodrigo Ortiz Monasterio @ Motto Berlin
from 7pm

On the ocasion of the Berlin Bienniale, a conversation between Mario Garcia Torres and Rodrigo Ortiz Monasterio on the work of Conlon Nancarrow and the publication Sur: Issue #1 Studies for Player Piano.

Sur is a contemporary art magazine published out of Mexico City annually. Both a publication and a series of invitations, Sur is premised on an aesthetics of encounter, specifically between the writing, art, and ideas expressed in Mexican culture in relation to discourses, philosophies, and art generated elsewhere. Published in both Spanish and English, Sur creates a new and necessary space for engaging and amplifying such discussions.

Issue #1 departs from the concept of a player piano and specifically addresses certain fragments of the life and work of experimental composer Conlon Nancarrow (1912-1997). Although an American, Nancarrow exiled himself to Mexico, where he could openly belong to the Communist party with social and political impunity. There, he became famous for a series of scores, entitled Studies for Player Piano (1948-1960 and 1965-1992), making him one of the first composers to write scores for machines to play. Although he lived in relative isolation in Mexico, he did become a Mexican citizen in 1955 and enjoyed a close collaboration with the Mexican modern architect and muralist Juan O’Gorman with whom he worked to build his house in Mexico City.

Sur is published by Bom Dia Boa Tarde Boa Noite.
