Neue Welt by Wolfgang Tillmans, Taschen.

Over the period of more than two decades, Wolfgang Tillmans has explored the medium of photo-imaging with greater range than any other artist of his generation. From snapshots of his friends to abstract images made in a darkroom without a  camera or works made with a photocopier, he has pushed the photographic process to its outer limits in myriad ways. For this collection of photos, his fourth book with Taschen, Tillmans turned away from the self-reflexive exploration of the photography medium that had occupied him for several years by focusing his lens on the outside world—from London and Nottingham to Tierra del Fuego, Tasmania, Saudi Arabia, and Papua New Guinea. He describes this new phase simply as “trying out what the camera can do for me, what I can do for it.” The result is a powerful and singular view of life today in diverse parts of the world, seen from many angles. Says Tillmans, “My travels are aimless as such, not looking for predetermined results, but hoping to find subject matter that in some way or other speaks about the time I’m in.”

The book features a fascinating conversation between the artist and Beatrix Ruf, director of Kunsthalle Zurich.

The exhibition “Wolfgang Tillmans. Neue Welt / Wolfgang Tillmans. New World” will be on show at the Kunsthalle in Zurich from 1 September to 4 November 2012.

Polyethylene. Common Task, published on the occasion of Paweł Althamer’s exhibition at Museion in Bolzano, is a visual and textual journey through the participatory processes that inform the work of the Warsaw-based artist. Focusing on the sculptural outcome of his research as well as the developments of those social activities that play a key role in the artist’s work, the book also reports on the “invasion” of the Museum by twenty-five friends and neighbors of the Polish artist.
With texts by Sebastian Cichocki, Letizia Ragaglia, Andrea Viliani, along with hundreds of images, the book narrates “an adventurous exploration of the unexpressed potential that lies in human action and the real world, as launching pads for the voyage towards others and toward other, possible worlds” (Andrea Viliani).

You Killed Me First: The Cinema Of Transgression.

Nightmarish scenarios of violence, dramatic states of mind, and perverse sexual abysses – the films of the Cinema of Transgression that were consciously aimed at shock, provocation, and confrontation, bear witness to an extraordinary radicality. In the 1980s a group of filmmakers from the Lower East Side in New York went on a collision course with the conventions of American society. Transcending all moral or aesthetic boundaries, the low budget films reveal social hardship met with sociopolitical indifference. Sometimes shot with stolen camera equipment, the films contain strident analyses of life in the Lower East Side defined by criminality, brutality, drugs, AIDS, sex, and excess. The catalogue is published on the occasion of the worldwide first exhibition on the Cinema of Transgression, YOU KILLED ME FIRST at KW Institute of Contemporary Art in Berlin. The catalogue includes contributions by Sylvère Lotringer, Carlo McCormick, Jonas Mekas, Susanne Pfeffer, Jack Sargeant and Nick Zedd.

Documenta 1955-2012: The Endless Story Of Two Lovers

This publication contains 60 photographs taken from Documenta, one of the most respected contemporary art exhibitions in the world.
All of the photographs, from different eras, have as subject of two elements that make possible the history of art itself: the work and the viewer. A journey through time that does not concern only the history of one of the most important exhibitions in the world, but in general the changes, the costumes, customs of the society that produced it. The book is a portrait of a love story between two people – one human, the other inanimate – that, although speaking a different language, are able to relate. These photographs have captured the peculiarities of these meetings. The dialogues of course we cannot hear, but can only imagine.

Ritual Without Myth. Royal College of Art.

Designed by Rustan Söderling and edited by Lily Hall and Laura Smith, the catalogue for Ritual without Myth features a series of short essays that contextualise the practice of the artists in the exhibition, and provide insight into their diverse approaches to ritual, as well as their embodiment and subversion of dominant myths.

Interspersed throughout the catalogue, a visual essay expands upon these written narratives through a series of images and quotations, including images from the Warburg Institute’s Photographic Collection, London, that reinforce and open out existing connections between the exhibited works.

The catalogue is accompanied by a full-colour insert with photographic documentation of the exhibition.

Printed by Art Quarters Press, the Ritual without Myth catalogue is printed on Cyclus Offset 100% recycled paper manufactured from 100% de-inked waste at Dalum mill.
