EINE BIBLIOTHEK GEHT AUF WANDERSCHAFT

Der Künstler und Sammler Andreas Züst war nicht nur eine legendäre Figur
des schweizerischen und europäischen Kunstlebens, sondern auch ein mit
einem vielschichtigen Bewusstsein ausgestatteter Bücherliebhaber, der
eklektisch und doch detailliert Bücher sammelte. Seine Bibliothek weist
darum weit über diejenige einer Privatperson heraus, in ihr lässt sich
das Gefüge unserer Kultur erkennen, das sich aus der Mischung seiner
assoziativen Interessen am Wetter, der Geologie, Astronomie, Physik,
Botanik, Kunstgeschichte, Anthropologie, Polarexpeditionen, Fotografie,
Malerei, Musik, Kitsch, UFOs, den Hell’s Angels, der Aussenseiter-Kultur,
psychedelischen Erfahrungen und darüber hinaus ergibt. Gleichzeitig ist
die Bibliothek Andreas Züst im Zeitalter der elektronischen Medien als
grosse Liebeserklärung an das Buch, seine Ästhetik und Haptik, zu
verstehen.

Nun begibt sich die Bibliothek mit ihren 12’000 Büchern und einem Gewicht
von etwa 9 Tonnen auf Reise, von ihrer ursprünglichen Heimat im Zürcher
Oberland über das Perla-Mode (ZH), das Sitterwerk (SG) und die Kantons-
bibliothek AR, Trogen, in den Alpenhof (AI), wo sie, nach zurückgelegten
100’000 Metern, in diesem ehemaligen Hotel und heutigen Kulturhaus ihre
neue Heimat findet. Begleitet wird die Bibliothek auf Wanderschaft von
Arbeiten der KünstlerInnen Thomas Galler, Ingo Giezendanner aka GRRRR,
Laurent Goei, Lutz/Guggisberg und Bessie Nager, allesamt Arbeiten,
die sowohl räumlich als auch inhaltlich mit Themen der Bibliothek
korrespondieren.

Auch begleitet wird die Bibliothek Andreas Züst von Veranstaltungen, die
sich in einem vielfältigen Programm Themen rund um eine solche Bücher-
sammlung auf Wanderschaft widmen:

Der englische Autor Ernest Charles Large (1902-76) war Chemiker für die
Industrie, Schriftsteller und Pflanzenwissenschaftler. Neben einer
wissenschaftlichen Abhandlung über Pflanzenkrankheiten, “Advance of the
Fungi”, veröffentlichte Large die beiden Romane “Sugar in the Air” und
“Asleep in the Afternoon”. Ein Abend in der Schnittmenge von Wissenschaft,
Literatur und der Metaphysik des Pilzsammlers.

dramatischen Reise des südpersischen Stammes der Bakhtiari von Angora
aus über den Fluss Karun und den Viertausender Zerd Kuh, hin zu den
saftigen Wiesen des Bakhtiari-Landes. Von den Machern des Filmklassikers
“King Kong”. Die Filmvorführung wird in einer Echtzeit-Vertonung be-
gleitet von Sven Bösiger (Electronics/Maultrommel) und Patrick Kessler
(Kontrabass).

As contribution to the event framework ’Survival Kit’ Egija Inzule (LV/CH) and Maja Wismer (CH) will curate an exhibition with and about books. Focusing on the double role of books within the field of art both as self-contained aesthetic entity and as a medium of information and discourse, a selection of exhibition catalogues, artists’ books and art theory publications will be displayed.
According to the concept of ’Survival Kit’ the books will be put on view in an empty shop in the city center of Riga, becoming a temporary bookshop, with most of the books also being for sale. Furthermore the exhibtion wishes to expand into a discursive platform: lectures, presentations and performances are scheduled. A special event will focus on the Latvian art book scene.
Among the invited guests are the curator and co-founder of the Berlin based art bookstore pro qm Axel John Wieder, the Stockholm based artists’ duo Goldin+Senneby, Alexis Zavialoff from Motto distribution, Flash Institut, estonian graphic designers Indrek Sirkel and Asterisk* – a mobile bookstore. In parallel to the exhibition Zürich based graphic designers Urs Lehni and Lex Trüb will hold a workshop with students of the graphic design department of the art school in Riga. The exhibition will also host ”The most beautiful Swiss Books 2008”.
In collaboration with the LCCA the exhibtion will host the book launch of the first Latvian translation of Theodor W. Adorno’s text ’Dialectic of Enlightenment’.
