Summary

The essay analyzes the transformations undergone by the artwork in the mid-sixties on the basis of a dual interest in history and the public sphere, or rather its disappearance in a society that was becoming amnesic and authoritarian with alarming speed. The two of us shared these and other concerns, which have led us to work together on a fair number of projects over the years. The novelty of Chevrier’s approach is the link he establishes between the public sphere and the artwork. The bourgeois idea of separating use value from exchange value has ceased to be a reality, and artists have gone from making objects to intervening in space, which they conceive as a place for interrelating with others. As its title indicates, L’Any 1967 – ‘The Year 1967’ – is an exercise in historical writing. It focuses on a very specific period of our recent history whose apex is reached with the riots of May ’68, a moment when the western system suffered one of its most profound crises since 1848.

Sinopsis
