Franz West - An Outdoor Sculpture

The artist Franz West (1947-2012) developed some 320 outdoor sculptures that are now scattered around the world. We can no longer ask the artist what led to his creation of outdoor sculptures, but as he became more well known, he gave numerous interviews in which he occasionally commented on them.' While at the beginning of his career, outdoor projects were not yet a topic or were down-right "unthinkable", beginning in the late 1990s they became a central work complex within his artistic production. West designed these sculptures, and his assistants carried them out.
In a cooperation project with KÖR Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Wien (Public Art in Vienna) in 2022, the five-part sculpture group was installed on Esteplatz in front of Franz West's long-time studio-his last place of work, which over the years was also a central meeting point for his artist friends.
