L'entre-deux de l'image
by Vincent Marcilhacy
VU’ par Isabelle Huppert
President of the Jury for the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, the French actress Isabelle Huppert evokes her passion for the still image. Confronted by the many and diverse approaches of the photographers at VU’, Isabelle Huppert reflects, in this “carte blanche”, upon those that most profoundly caught her eye.
Connivence de tournages
Three decades of fllm set photographs! From Raymond Cauchetier’s set pictures of Nouvelle Vague cinema in the fund of the Cinémathèque française to Gilles Favier series on the shooting of French director Mathieu Kassovitz’s movie La Haine [ Hate ] where set photo-graphy meets documentary photography to become a social document; to Dityvon’s exclusive pictures, illustration of his love for cinema and great movie directors of the 80s.
Kommunalki
Françoise Huguier’s photographer career has often met movies sets. In Kommounalki, her story on community flats in Saint Petersburg, she has expressed the urge to use a double language: photography and cinema. A meeting and an interview on the edges of photography.
Carlos Saura, témoin du mouvement
Famous Spanish director, Carlos Saura has first developed a photographic work quite undiscovered but as accomplished as his movies. Let’s have a glance back at the transition period from his photographic series Pueblos y Gentes de España to his first feature-length movie Los Golfos.
Johan Van der Keuken par Marin Karmitz
The french producer Marin Karmitz evokes the work of the dutch filmmaker and photographer he met during his studies at IDHEC.
VU’ à Cannes
The many styles and approaches of the photographers of the Agency, and the VU’ Gallery weave a thread through twenty five years of commissions at Cannes. From Michael Ackerman to Lars Tunbjörk, the portraits of Pierre-Olivier Deschamps and of Richard Dumas, to the tender yet simultaneously caustic images of Steeve Iuncker : a panorama which is also that of photography itself, and of its processes, from polaroid to the digital image.
Cinéma Lisboa
Carte blanche of Richard Dumas about portuguese cinema. A "carnet de bord " published in the daily newspaper Libération at summer 1999.
Photographie et cinéma
The participants of the round-table welcomed the idea of an open conversation upon the theme of “photography and cinema”, an attempt to explore the links which unite these two visual arts.
Cindy, the doll is mine
Tribute to Cindy Sherman with a short film by Bertrand Bonello in which the actress Asia Argento, face to face with her double, questions us on the photographer and his model, on the original and the copy. When a filmmaker sets in movement the work of the photographer and thus extends the reach of the fixed image.
La robe de Mariée
Orly Dahan’s work combines memories, illusions, childhood wounds by taking as a starting point a wedding dress offered by her mother for her 18th birthday. The artist questions through photography her relation to reality and fiction, to create a work between photography, staging and video.
CDG
In honor of the VU’ Agency’s 20th anniversary, twenty photographers were invited to do a series of photographs on Paris. Together with FEMIS [the French film school] , the agency also asked young filmmakers to make a short film portrait of one of the participating photographers. Stéphane Raymond directed A memorable fancy, which follows Swedish photographer JH Engström in his work at Charles de Gaulle Airport. Here is her account of this unusual experience:
Entre séquences et fictions
Michael Ackerman and Duane Michals explore in their own unique way the proposition of a photography driven by story-telling : a certain approach to narrative. For Michals, the subject becomes the sequence ; for Ackerman, the story comes to life through the abstraction of the photographic book and the sequence of images placed one after the other.
