Product Description

“I drew a breath and yelled out but it weren’t grief like it had been the first time. This were rage. I hollered like I meant to eat her up, all bellowed out in one long snarling rush” (Alan Moore, “Jerusalem”)

Edelfaul is proud to present the debut album of Spirit Skinned, a duo rooted in the musical underground of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
The area is known worldwide as a high tension zone, and the small musical scene that bred Spirit Skinned enjoys a reputation for an uncompromising and often radical sound approach, paired with a rare level of perfectionism. If anything, their music lives up to that notoriety.

On their self titled album they bring down a blunt force forged in years of DIY attitude and socio-politic disgruntlement, matching the anger-as-an-energy of ancestors and contemporaries as Duma, The Bug, Meira Asher, Last Poets, Suicide, and Mark Stewart, and still allowing to conjure up graceful moments of relaxation and reflexion towards the end.

Spanning the gaps between grime, industrial, hardcore, musique concrète, politics and expressionism, all music was performed, recorded, contorted by Spirit Skinned, mixed by Assaf Tager (Katamine) and Elion Elikam (Moon Gear) and mastered in Berlin by high pressure expert Stefan Betke (Pole, Scape Mastering). We are also happy that saxophone player Shoham Manela returns to Edelfaul with a guest performance on “The Root”.

Spirit skinned are Ben Ronen (AKA diburnagua), former vocalist in various punk and noise projects in the Tel Aviv area and Ofer Tisser, producer/instrumentalist and a central figure in Jerusalem's underground music scene. The mixture between Ronen's raw and improvisational vocal style and Tisser's productions create an aesthetic echo chamber of its own, using elements of noise, dub, industrial and experimental beats-based electronics. Recorded in different locations in the city of Jerusalem and in a rural desert area, their debut album explores a process of emotional transformation and growth through sound and words, focusing on ideas of trauma, disillusion from political struggles and fear of future uncertainty.
