*Rainbow Images: Propaganda Posters and the Struggle of New China* utilises the visual imagery and artistic language found in propaganda posters to sketch out the history of the Republic’s development, transporting us back to those unforgettable eras whilst enabling us to examine our past from different perspectives, through the lens of the present. In today’s age of mass media and information overload, looking back at those propaganda posters—with their simple visual concepts, straightforward messages and concise headlines—not only brings us pleasure but also offers insights into design methodologies and an understanding of design history, making this a highly valuable book. About the Author: Han Binghua is a renowned Hong Kong designer and artist who was appointed as one of the judges and revisers for the design of the Hong Kong regional flag and emblem. In 2003, he was selected by the New York-based publisher Phaidon as one of the world’s top 100 graphic designers, and a monograph was published in his honour. In 2004, he was awarded the title of ‘Master of Original Design’ by the Shanghai Municipal Government; in 2012, he was named ‘Person of the Year’ for Shanghai, the World Design Capital; and in 2016, he was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. He was the lead designer for the commemorative stamps marking the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China. Han Binghua designed a series of posters for Shanghai’s bid to host the 2010 World Expo and subsequently served as a member of the judging panel and expert adviser for the Shanghai World Expo. His poster works have been selected on numerous occasions for the Warsaw International Poster Biennale in Poland, the Lahti Poster Exhibition held at the Lahti Art Museum in Finland, the Paris International Poster Exhibition in France, and the Mount Fuji Poster Exhibition in Japan, amongst others. Editor’s Recommendations: 1. This book systematically chronicles the major events and significant phases since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, encapsulating them through the visual medium of propaganda posters. It offers both meticulous historical analysis and stylistic comparisons across different periods. 2. By skilfully employing a distinctive ‘red’ thread to link the changes of the times with the diverse evolution of propaganda poster studios, the book provides us with a unique perspective—almost like a lens through which readers can see beyond the surface. 3. Chapter Five is like a colourful and magnificent art gallery, organised according to the themes of the propaganda posters. Whether presenting full images or close-ups, from bold brushstrokes to delicate techniques, and from dazzling colours to rich layers, it allows the reader to appreciate the ideals and passion poured into the works by their creators.
