Condition Report: Symposium on Building Art Institutions in Africa is a collection of essays resulting from of the symposium held in Dakar in 2012. They address the changing role of art institutions and initiatives in Africa, where the cultural and artistic context is characterized by a predominance of government led art programs and infrastructure. The last decade has witnessed the emergence of a variety of independent art spaces using a wide range of formats to promote art and critical exchange. These initiatives draw a new cartography of artistic action in Africa. This reader looks at the structural and programmatic issues at play within those institutions. Models and profiles of art institutions developed in other regions of the world are also examined. The publication also discusses how former colonial powers define and implement their strategies of cultural representation and exchange in post-colonial areas, and how these in turn influence local dynamics of cultural action.

Etat des Lieux: symposium sur la création d'institutions d'art en Afrique est un recueil d'articles issuy du symposium éponyme qui s'est tenu à Dakar en 2012. Ils traitent de l'évolution du rôle des institutions d'art et des initatives artistiques en Afrique, où le contexte culturel et artistique se caractérise par une prédominance des programmes et d'infrastructures dirigés par le gouvernement. La dernière décennie a vu l'émergence d'une variété d'espaces d'art indépendants qui utilisent un large éventail de formats pour promouvoir l'art et l'esprit critique. Ces initiatives dessinent une nouvelle cartographie de l'action artistique en Afrique. Cet ouvrage aborde les sujets structurels et programmatiques au sein de ces institutions. Les modèles et les profils des institutions artistiques développés dans d'autres régions du monde sont également examinés. La publication se penche aussi sur comment les anciennes puissances coloniales définissent et mettent en oeuvreleurs stratégies de représentation et d'échanges culturels sur les territoires post-coloniaux, et comment celles-ci influencent à leur tour les dynamiques locales d'action culturelle.
