Quelques maisons, une station service, un bureau de poste, deux diners... Et une base scientifique énigmatique. Gakona, petit village au centre de l'Alaska, abrite le programme de recherche américain H.A.A.R.P. (High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program). Inspirés par les travaux de l'inventeur Nikola Tesla, des chercheurs y étudieraient la transmission de l'électricité dans les hautes couches de l'atmosphère. Mais, en raison de son financement militaire et des peurs liées à l'électromagnétisme, H.A.A.R.P. est aussi devenu une source intarissable de rumeurs. Dérèglement climatique, influence sur les comportements humains… On prête à cette forêt d'antennes des pouvoirs dignes de la science-fiction. Constituée de quatre expositions personnelles (Micol Assaël, Ceal Floyer, Laurent Grasso et Roman Signer), la session GAKONA se situe à la croisée du fait et de la rumeur, du réel et du fantasme, de la science et de l'imaginaire. Présentant des œuvres qui échappent à toute velléité d'interprétation figée, elle poursuit ainsi la volonté du Palais de Tokyo de promouvoir une dynamique du regard et de l'esprit, fondée sur une oscillation permanente entre pôles opposés.
Ce numéro du magazine PALAIS / est construit autour de l'exposition GAKONA avec : une nouvelle de Cory Doctorow autour de Nikola Tesla, une interview de Laurent Grasso par Marc-Olivier Wahler, deux portfolios (Ceal Floyer, Roman Signer), des documents d'archive sur Alexander Chizhevsky (sélectionnés par Micol Assaël), des expériences inattendues sous haute tension, ainsi qu'un guide complet de l'exposition.
A few houses, a service station, a post office, a couple of diners... and a mysterious scientific research base. Gakona, a small village in the center of Alaska, is home to the American H.A.A.R.P. research program (High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program). Inspired by the works of the inventor Nikola Tesla, it is believed that researchers there are studying the transmission of electricity in the high strata of the atmosphere. But because of its military funding and the fears associated with electromagnetism, H.A.A.R.P. has also become an inexhaustible source of rumors. From climatic disruption to influence over human behavior, this forest of antennas has been credited with powers worthy of science fiction. Made up of four solo exhibitions (Micol Assaël, Ceal Floyer, Laurent Grasso and Roman Signer), the GAKONA session lies at the intersection of fact and rumor, reality and phantasm, science and imagination. Presenting works that elude any suggestion of a fixed interpretation, it thus pursues the Palais de Tokyo’s intention of promoting a dynamics of looking and thinking, based on a permanent oscillation between opposite poles.
