Marieta Chirulescu

Recapitulation of Twentieth-Century Art in the Age of Technological Reproduction

The first monograph created by Marieta Chirulescu (b. Sibiu, Romania 1974) is published in conjunction with her solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Basel, which opened in September 2010. Printed in the A4 format and designed to look like a facsimile, the artist’s book is divided into four sections. The first section consists of twenty pages of black-and-white photocopies of the sort that frequently figure as preliminary stages for the artist’s abstract pictures on paper and canvas. The second section contains essays by the art historian Mihaela Chiriac and Adam Szymczyk, the director of Kunsthalle Basel, that discuss Chirulescu’s work in depth. Details from all prints and paintings on display in the exhibition appear in full-size reproductions in the third section. The fourth section, finally, consists of an index; it is only here that captioned illustrations show the works in their entirety. On the levels of text as well as images, the book works with the play of closeness and distance, reflecting the procedures of Chirulescu’s art as well as the question of how to adequately represent a past exhibition.
