Product Description

In his videos and their thematically related groups of painting, sculpture, drawing and collage, Dutch artist Erik van Lieshout brings the personal and the political together as effortlessly as he combines diverse influences from pop, trash and high culture. His purely associative logic consistently yields new insights on societal phenomena, at once exhilarating and poignantly illuminating. Lieshout took on ‘crisis’ as his fundamental theme for the exhibition project ‘keine Kohle kein Holz’ (‘no coal no wood’) at Galerie Guido W. Baudach in 2009. From the perspective of the current global economic crisis, he harks back to artistic reactions that were provoked in two of his compatriots when they were faced with a similar situation at the end of the twenties and beginning of the thirties: that of documentary film-maker and professed Marxist Joris Ivens, and that of architect Gerrit Rietveld, the liberal-bourgeois modernist. These art-historical citations coalesce with references to the illness of his own long-term colleague and film editor Core van Hoeven, the death of Michael Jackson, the rise of Dutch right-wing extremist Gert Wilders and many other ‘crisis symptoms’ besides. The result is a multi-layered Gesamtkunstwerk on the state of the nation, the world in general and the artist in particular.

Erik van Lieshout, born 1968, lives and works in Rotterdam.
