Japan: A Visual Essay

A graphic essay, a collage of moments coming together through snapshots and graphic elements.

"For as long as I can remember, I have collected printed mementos from all my travels. From professionally made postcards to train tickets, I treasure these pieces of paper as my greatest souvenirs. These pieces paper embody the graphic culture of each place. They are an insightful way to see the visual identity of a city down to the utilitarian, unpretentious details. In 2019, I went to Japan and, to commemorate my trip, I created this project by combining several types of paper souvenirs gathered during my stay, such as food labels, vintage printed matter, and everyday ephemera, with a selection of photos from the trip. In the following pages, you'll find memories from my journey assembled together as a visual essay, not in chronological order, but as individual elements that come together to create a new narrative."
