Wallet #10 - Heirs of History

The 10th and final edition of Wallet “Heirs of History” is a conversation on archival practices in fashion. As we know, all good things must come to an end – but what is left behind after the end? We question how the conditions around fashion collections – private, commercial or institutional – and its corresponding theoretical or critical discussion have changed over time. What role does the archive play in the future of fashion? What sets a costume collection apart from a wardrobe? And how can conservation and preservation in fashion be a priority in a fashion world that’s always on its eternal search for the new?

This issue’s text conversation invites one historian, one collector, and one archivist; Dr. Valerie Steele, David Casavant, and Emman Debattista, into a conversation about their archival practices. These heirs of history have a common understanding of “the archive”, certainly as an obsession, but also as a tool for new creative knowledge and cultural capital, and we want to know more.

In this issue’s visual conversation we have created a 20-page retrospective of historical moments by fashion designers – spanning from overlooked practitioners or unsung heroes – or who have either left, retired, died – been forgotten about – or, in some other way, aren’t practicing any longer. Including Martin Margiela, Alaïa, Helmut Lang, Willi Smith, Final Home, Max Mara, Comme des Garçons, Schiaparelli, Hood by Air, Stefano Pilati, AF Vandevorst, Phoebe Philo, +++ This dossier is a homage to them, a response to the mythical idea of “legacy” and a way for their work to live on, possibly forever.
