Gigs im Kant-Kino: 5 Jahre Konzerte

This suberb photo book came about in 1980 as a collaboration with the former owner of the Kantkino (Kant Cinema), Reinhard "Conny" Konzak and renowned Berlin photographers. No one less than Jim Rakete, Fred Baumgart or Ute Henkel , to name a few, made concert photos between 1975 and 1980 in Berlin´s most important and best known venue at the time.
In the complete and chronological summary at the end of the book - local and increasingly more international artists are mentioned. Household names such as Nina Hagen, The Scorpions, Blondie, The Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith,etc. - made early appearances there. The rich offerings of gigs was forming into something so extensive that a
continuing operation as a cinema became hardly possible. The public´s interest in the concert activity was aroused! For example, the Police concert on June 20, 1979 - one year later they played to a full house in the Deutschlandhalle, which held about 12,000 concert goers. Or Iggy Pop who performed for three consecutive days in 1978 and thereby heated up the crowd. This was also the time when he and David Bowie were living in Berlin.
This photo book is a unique testimony to Berlin´s concert culture in Kantkino (the city´s answer to New York´s CBGB), which also used to be Berlin´s most exciting music venue.

Dieses großartige Fotobuch entstand 1980 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem damaligen Betreiber des Kantkinos, Reinhard "Conny" Konzak und namenhaften Berliner Fotografen und Fotografinnen. Keine Geringeren als Jim Rakete, Fred Baumgart oder Ute Henkel stehen stellvertretend für Weitere und lieferten Fotos der Konzerte, die zwischen 1975 und 1980 an Berlins wichtigstem und bekanntesten Auftrittsort zu jener Zeit stattfanden. In der kompletten und chronologischen Konzertübersicht, am Ende des Buchs, ist neben der lokalen, die internationale Ausrichtung des Programms erkennbar: Namen wie Lok Kreuzberg oder Morgenrot, Hölderlin oder Can sind im Wechsel mit Camel, Hawkwind oder der Edgar Brougthon Band ebenso genannt, wie später Graham Parker, Patti Smith, Blondie oder Joy Division. Das Angebot an Gigs gestaltete sich zunehmend reichhaltig, so das ein kontinuierlicher Kinobetrieb zeitweilig kaum noch möglich war.Das Interesse des Publikums am Konzertbetrieb war geweckt! Zum Beispiel für das Konzert von Police am 20.06.79, die ein Jahr später die Deutschlandhalle füllten. Oder Iggy Pop, der 1978 an drei aufeinander folgenden Tagen den Saal zum kochen brachte.
