chronicle by Jeannene Przyblyski
with contributions by Jonathan Pacheco Bell and Susan Morgan

Some Place Chronicles is a series of creative placemaking projects set in three unincorporated communities located in the Second District of Los Angeles County. Numerous and varied engagements with the people who live and work in these communities have culminated in three unique books—each containing explorations, documentation, and pragmatic and poetic testimonies of what has been and dreams of what might be—created by three different artists/collectives.

Some Place Chronicles asks: What space of possibility opens up when a particular artist encounters a particular place and the people who live and work there? How can artists engage communities through their own distinctive practices, and the methods of looking and reflecting they’ve developed? And how can the communities respond in kind, by inviting artists to their community meetings and gatherings, their libraries, parks, schools and churches, their businesses and their homes? How can artists and communities engage each other in a process of mutual discovery?

Some Place Chronicles is a project of the Los Angeles Arts Commission in partnership with the Temporary Institute of Unincorporated Studies at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), funded by the Office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.

JEANNENE PRZYBLYSKI: LEAD ARTIST
Jeannene Przyblyski was born in Norwalk, California, and has lived in San Francisco and Los Angeles. She is an artist, historian, teacher, and provost at CalArts. Her artwork combines deep research and a wide-ranging and playful use of media to foster exploration and discovery within everyday landscapes. She has made a perfume for San Francisco, a trail of urban land-use monuments for Portland, a cinematic audio experience for a river outside Boston, and a radio station for the Golden Gate Bridge. A Paseo Through Time in Florence-Firestone is her first project for Los Angeles.

CATHERINE LEE: BOOK DESIGNER
Catherine Lee is a freelance designer and printmaker, currently working on a variety of personal and professional projects, publications, and exhibitions. She is interested in the physical matter of design and uses a painterly sensibility and sophisticated color palette in her work. Lee received her BFA in Oriental Painting from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, and an MFA in Graphic Design from CalArts.

CALVIN RYE: BOOK DESIGNER
Calvin Rye is a graphic designer and printmaker working in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His practice is split between professional work for clients such as Nike and Intel, and more expressive and experimental work that includes printmaking and smaller design projects. Teaching binds these practices together, combining Rye’s interest in personal process and expressive making with design research, structure, and direct communication. He has an MFA from CalArts and an undergraduate degree in Business from the University of Michigan.
