Boys driving cars, girls riding horses – some of them come back while others drive by. »Pferde & Autos« is a careful look on village life in the rural area of Northern Germany.

Clara Bahlsen (geb. 1978) wirft mit ihren Fotografien einen ebenso behutsamen wie präzisen Blick auf das Leben auf dem Lande. Pferde und Autos, das sind Fortbewegungsmittel ganz unterschiedlicher Geschwindigkeit. Und während die einen zu Pferde durchs Dorf reiten, sind die anderen vielleicht schon auf der nächsten Autobahnausfahrt auf dem Weg in die große Stadt. Wie fühlt es sich an, wenn man aufs Land zurückkehrt? Und wie, wenn man bleibt? Unaufdringlich nimmt Clara Bahlsens Kamera Menschen und Landschaften in den Blick, kommt ihnen sehr nah, ohne sie bloßzustellen. Dabei spielen ihre Bilder weder eine unbeobachtete Natürlichkeit vor, noch wird die fotografische Technik auf ausschmückende Inszenierungen verwendet. Die Kamera bleibt spürbarer Beobachter und poetisches Aufnahmeinstrument zugleich. Mit Blicken in die Kamera und einer zwischen Unsicherheit und Unbefangenheit changierenden Körperhaltung wirken die Fotografierten einer sanften Befragung ausgesetzt.

Die Landschaftsaufnahmen inszenieren keine wilde Ursprünglichkeit, sondern zeigen durchweg kultiviertes Land – Äcker, Häuser, Wege. Hier wird die Anwesenheit der fotografischen Apparatur durch eine so beiläufige wie ästhetische Betonung des Linearen deutlich. Clara Bahlsens Landleben ist in ein mildes Licht getaucht, das nie grell oder verklärend wirkt, sondern seinen Gegenstand in zarte Grau- Braun- und Grüntöne taucht.


With her photographs, Clara Bahlsen (b. 1978) takes a cautious and precise look at life in the country. Horses and cars are means of locomotion that travel at very different speeds. And while some are riding through the village on horseback, others may already be on their way to the big city at the next motorway exit. \n \nHow does it feel when you return to the country? And what if you stay? Clara Bahlsen's camera unobtrusively focuses on people and landscapes, getting very close to them without exposing them. Her pictures neither pretend to be unobserved naturalness, nor is the photographic technique used for decorative staging. The camera remains a tangible observer and poetic recording instrument at the same time. With a look into the camera and a posture that oscillates between insecurity and impartiality, the photographed appear exposed to a gentle questioning.

The landscape shots do not stage wild originality, but show cultivated land throughout - fields, houses, paths. Here the presence of the photographic apparatus becomes clear through an emphasis on linearity that is as casual as it is aesthetic. Clara Bahlsen's country life is immersed in a mild light that never seems glaring or glorifying, but instead bathes its subject in delicate shades of grey, brown and green.
