'Paint En pointe' collects ten pieces for dance by Sydneyite Eugene Ward, who's probably best known as TTT and Opal Tapes' Dro Carey or Tuff Sherm. They were written with the choreography of Patric Kuo in mind, intended for a variety of ensemble performances from solo to groups of up to 16 dancers. Judging from what we've previously heard by Ward, this release stakes out his most experimental territory, exploring the intersections of his formal compositional practice and the requirements of dancers beyond the conventional 'floor/head-space. We can hear him reference everything from the weightless grime reductions of Logos, Wen and co, thru to the slow/fast structures of Chicago footwork and the elaborate trills of trap, exploring myriad options for movement by bodies much more limber and skilled than our own. The results recall Holly Herndon's 'Bodysound' 10", which effectively worked to an inverted formula - recording bodies in motion to make new music, rather than recording new music for bodies in motion - as much as Shackleton's psychedelic trances, and are held in sharp contrast with the real thing via Murlo's inimitably stylish and insistent road rave remix of 'Printed Matter', or the infectious, Sleeparchive-style efficiency of Cliques' 'Place' remix.
