In the course of the research for the new exhibition the curatorial and scientific team in the collections of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum came across postcards with Austrian sights. On their backs the Polish Auschwitz survivor Jan Kupiec drew scenes from the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration and extermination camps after his liberation in 1945 in Mauthausen/Ebensee.

The present 13 postcards represent a special find.
The backs of photographed Austrian sights served
Kupiec as a base to remember his memories of the atrocities of
Auschwitz and Birkenau. With that he linked
these seemingly separate worlds in a disturbing way, so that
today in these maps the central idea of the new exhibition, the
to make visible the connecting lines between Austria and Auschwitz,
materialized.
