Noise After Babel: Language Unrestrained

Noise after Babel ist das Ergebnis einer künstlerisch-theoretischen Recherche. Das Buch untersucht die Vieldeutigkeit von Sprache als potentielle Basis für politisches Engagement. Die Metapher, von der die Publikation ausgeht, ist eine Verbindung der Wörter „Babel“ und „Noise“ (Rauschstörung). Sie basiert auf dem Konzept einer perfekt funktionierenden, zwangfreien Monosemie (Babel) – also der Erscheinung, dass einem sprachlichen Zeichen nur eine Bedeutung zugeordnet ist, die aber nach einem Eingriff bzw. Wandel (dem Verlust der Unschuld) durch eine unerwünschte, unerträgliche Situation (Noise) ersetzt wird. Die Buchidee stammt von Sezgin Boynik und Minna Henriksson. Mit Beiträgen von: Antti ‚Eze‘ Eskelinen, Alpo Jaakola, Rastko Močnik, Eetu Viren und Milena Solomun sowie Interviews mit den Wissenschaftlern Liban Ali Hersi, Minna Hjort, Ulla Horstia, Salli Kankaanpää, Mika Lähteenmäki, Lauri Siisiäinen und Klaas Ruppel.

Noise after Babel is the result of artistic-theoretical research. It examines the multi-accentuality of language as a potential ground for political engagement. Our general metaphor coupling the words “Babel” and “noise” is based on the idea of a perfectly working system of univocality – the phenomenon whereby a linguistic term has only one meaning assigned to it – that functions without coercion (Babel) but which, after an intervention/change (loss of innocence), is replaced by an unwanted and unbearable situation (noise). The book is authored by Sezgin Boynik and Minna Henriksson, and it contains contributions by Antti ‘Eze’ Eskelinen, Alpo Jaakola, Rastko Močnik, Eetu Viren, and Milena Solomun as well as interviews with researchers Liban Ali Hersi, Minna Hjort, Ulla Horstia, Salli Kankaanpää, Mika Lähteenmäki, Lauri Siisiäinen, and Klaas Ruppel.

Sezgin Boynik (1977) lives and works in Helsinki. He holds a PhD in Social Science. Minna Henriksson (1976) lives and works as an artist in Helsinki. Boynik and Henriksson have been publishing on punk culture, the relationship between aesthetics and politics, cultural nationalism, the Situationist International, and Yugoslavian cinema.
