Product Description

Vonconflon invites you into the world of Nested, an international compilation of new works by artists exploring traces of the natural, the human, and the handmade within the synthetic. They are the insects and mice who have burrowed inside an ancient TV cabinet, tasting its circuits and wires. Within, they discover a life-sustaining warmth, as well as joy, loneliness, fear, determination, and tranquility.

Nested leads us through kaleidoscopic snowfall, down a countryside trail, and into misty sea-marshes. It guides us through caves and empty rooms, and into a dog’s summer dream. We wander in circles, plunge beneath a sloshing current, and find ourselves dissolving entirely. It’s no surprise that many of the musicians here are also accomplished visual artists. Each contributor pursues their work with a distinct experimental sensitivity, finding sounds, structures, and processes through idiosyncratic methods of their own invention.

Vonconflon’s first compilation release grew out of our deep regard for each artist’s work. This is a gathering shaped both by admiration and the recognition of a subtle, shared sensibility worth examining. With this in mind, we have brought together influential visionaries and contemporary dreamers, some of whom step outside of better-known identities for the occasion. All eleven tracks are recent and previously unreleased.

Tomutonttu (Finland) is a human called Jan Anderzén, a visual artist and the leader of a respected avant-garde sound group Kemialliset Ystävät. Toy reed streams, mutilated vocals and groovy loops of animal noise are some of the colors in Tomutonttu’s whirling mess, a microcosmos of strange sound creatures and dirt flying around in the stereo space and interacting with a logic all of their own.

Alexander Ross (USA) is a visual artist with an experimental approach to music and sound recording. Since 1978, after a life-changing meeting with R. Stevie Moore in a New Jersey record store, he has pursued a DIY way of assembling sounds and instruments as a form of discovery, through his musical vehicle Fantastic Palace, and his sound collage, Grandfather Paradox.

Manoir Molle (France) is a microtonal electronic composer and one-half of the mysterious Jean-Marie Mercimek. Her works are theatrical music without theater, audiobooks without books, copies without originals.

Ksenija Sundejeva (Germany) is a vocalist, multimedia artist and graphic designer, best known as the frontwoman of the Latvian shoegaze and dreampop band Tribes of the City.

Rimarimba (UK) is the project of Robert Cox, based in Felixstowe on the Suffolk coast. For over four decades, Cox has been exploring the parameters of a particular musical mode: one where minimalism is removed from its high-art perch and smuggled in amongst the do-it-yourself creativity of the underground. Here, Rimarimba lets the music breathe—and most importantly play.

Kevin Micka (USA) is a sound artist and musician best known for his critically acclaimed project Animal Hospital, which simultaneously references contemporary rock and pop music while veering into ambient passages and full-on improvisation. On Nested, he presents excerpts from an installation of custom-built instruments that play themselves through plucking and self-oscillation.

Noell Dorsey (USA) is a singer, improviser and experimental vocalist based in Somerville MA. She is a member of the venerable ultra-heavy psych-rock outfit Major Stars. Coming from a classical singing background, she incorporates various vocal techniques and extensions to create a textural and uninhibited terrain.

Günter Schlienz (Germany) creates meditative works of epic reach with intimate, reflective resonance. His individual style comes from an ever-searching sense of experimentalism that stems not only from his sense of composition but his creation of his own modular synthesizers and other instruments.

RNL (Germany) has been constructing vivid, labyrinthine environments through layered tape manipulation and collage since the early 1990s. As of this writing, present and past RNL members have included Fleawig, Nøsferatu, Ms. Anthropy, Un-D.T., Loopis, Rusty Pipewater, and Mr. A/B, at least one of whom is the artist Jesse Farber.
