Quatre instantanés d'un tapeur à gages, is a piece commissioned by the Satie Festival, under the artistic direction of Nathalie Ruget, to mark the centenary of the composer's death. Tapeur à gages because it’s how Erik Satie self-deprecatingly described his work as an accompanist in Parisian cabarets. Quatre instantanés because the piece is a collection of four freeze frames, four key moments in the composer's life, sketched out as sound vignettes. We journey successively through his Montmartre period, his mystical phase, the years known as the “rough times,” and finally the period of his artistic maturity. Four perspectives on an unconventional existence, between humor, loneliness, tenderness, and provocation.
